Product Description

Crochet Sloth Scarf Pattern.

My daughter is a huge sloth fan, a self confessed crazy sloth lady! She asked me top make her a sloth scarf, this pattern is the result of the scarf I made for her.

This adorable Sloth Scarf, is warm, snuggly and super, super soft. A real treat to wear on cold days and sure to be a favourite with any sloth fan.

The scarf pictured is quite long, but the pattern is easily adapted to make a shorter scarf.

Suggested Yarn: Homespun Thick and Quick, in Barley, Dove and Edwardian. I would strongly suggest you use this yarn to make the scarf as it brushes out beautifully to create a nice furry finish, just like a real sloth's fur!

The pattern is written in UK terminology.

Sloth Scarf by Seòlta Hooker

What is Being Made

The Sloth Scarf is a textured crochet scarf designed by Seòlta Hooker that features a playful sloth character integrated into the accessory. This intermediate-level project combines functional scarf construction with amigurumi-style embellishments, creating a whimsical wearable piece that doubles as a decorative statement accessory.

Craft and Primary Technique

This pattern is executed entirely in crochet, using the craft to construct both the main scarf body and the detailed sloth facial features and appendages. The design employs crochet's versatility to blend structural elements with decorative components in a single cohesive project.

Crochet Stitches and Techniques Used

The Sloth Scarf pattern utilizes fundamental crochet stitches to build its structure and texture:

  • Chain (ch) - Used for foundation rows and stitch construction
  • Double Crochet (dc) - Primary stitch for building fabric density and structure
  • Half Double Crochet (htc) - Used to create varied fabric texture and drape
  • Slip Stitch (ss) - Employed for joining rounds and finishing edges
  • Increases (Inc) - Applied to shape and expand sections of the design
  • Decreases (dec) - Used to reduce stitch counts and create shaping

The pattern is written in UK crochet terminology, which uses different stitch names than US conventions. Beyond basic stitches, the project incorporates amigurumi construction techniques for creating the stuffed sloth features, including working in rounds and strategic shaping to achieve dimensional form.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Sloth Scarf requires super chunky weight yarn as its primary material. Seòlta Hooker specifically recommends Homespun Thick and Quick yarn in three colorways: 3 skeins in Barley (primary color), 1 skein in Edwardian, and 1 skein in Dove. This yarn choice is intentional—the designer notes that Homespun Thick and Quick brushes out beautifully to create a nice hairy scarf texture, adding visual interest and tactile appeal to the finished piece.

Additional yarn materials include oddments of DK weight yarn in cream for the claws and chunky yarn in dark grey for the mouth details. These accent yarns provide color contrast and definition to the sloth's facial features.

Tools and Hardware

The project requires two crochet hooks of different sizes: a 6.5 mm hook for working with the super chunky Homespun yarn, and a 2 mm hook for the finer detail work on smaller elements like claws and facial features. Additional tools include a tapestry needle for sewing in yarn ends, stitch markers for tracking progress, and a bristle brush for finishing the hairy texture of the completed scarf.

Embellishments and Notions

To bring the sloth character to life, the pattern incorporates safety components: 2 brown safety eyes measuring 15 mm and a black triangle safety nose measuring 30 mm. The design also uses toy stuffing to add dimension and structure to the sloth elements. Six white pipe cleaners, each 6 inches long and 4 mm wide, are cut in half to create the sloth's characteristic claws, adding a three-dimensional sculptural element to the accessory.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for crocheters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle projects combining basic stitches with shaping, stuffing, and embellishment techniques. The integration of amigurumi principles with scarf construction requires understanding of stitch abbreviations, working in rounds, and assembly of multiple components.
