Product Description

When I thought about this sweater, the background music in my head was a song by Wilco called, “Sky Blue Sky”. So, there you go. A sweater was born. I generally start with a sketch and idea and match the yarn to it. With this top down raglan, the yarn and color came first. The simple shape, with the yarn over cable edging, makes me think of happy thoughts and days with blue skies.

Sky Blue Sky Sweater by Terri Kruse

What is Being Made

Sky Blue Sky is a top-down raglan sweater designed by independent designer Terri Kruse. This knitted garment features a simple, elegant silhouette inspired by the Wilco song of the same name. The sweater is available in six sizes, ranging from 32.5 inches to 45 inches in finished bust circumference, with the pictured sample measuring 35 inches and worn with approximately one inch of positive ease for a comfortable, relaxed fit.

Design and Construction Techniques

This sweater is constructed using a top-down raglan method, a popular technique in modern knitting that allows for seamless construction and easy customization of fit. The designer began with yarn and color selection before sketching the design, resulting in a garment that prioritizes the beauty of the yarn choice. The simple shape is enhanced by a distinctive yarn over cable edging that adds visual interest and texture to the piece. This construction method is ideal for creating a garment with minimal seaming and the ability to try on as you work.

Stitches and Stitch Techniques Used

The pattern employs several fundamental knitting stitches and techniques:

  • Knit stitch (k) - the basic foundation stitch used throughout the garment
  • Yarn over (yo) - creates decorative eyelet holes and is featured prominently in the cable edging
  • Cable stitches (C3L) - a specific cable technique where two stitches are placed on a cable needle and held at the back while the next stitch is knitted, then the two held stitches are knitted together, creating a twisted, textured appearance
  • Bind off (BO) - used to secure stitches and finish edges
  • Cast on (CO) - the foundation technique for beginning the sweater

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The Sky Blue Sky sweater is designed to be knitted with Quince and Co Chickadee, a 100% wool yarn in sport weight. The specific colorway used in the pictured sample is glacier, a blue shade that inspired the sweater's name and aesthetic. Yardage requirements vary by size: the smallest size (32.5 inches) requires 800 yards, while the largest size (45 inches) requires 1100 yards. The pattern recommends purchasing 5 to 7 skeins depending on size, with each skein containing 181 yards and weighing 50 grams. A 10% yardage bumper is included in the pattern to account for gauge variations and swatching.

The pattern is worked on US 4/3.5mm needles, appropriate for the sport weight yarn and the intermediate skill level required for this project. The needle size ensures proper gauge and fabric drape for the finished garment.

Skill Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable with techniques such as top-down raglan construction, cable stitches, and reading pattern abbreviations. The straightforward shape and construction method make it an accessible intermediate project that produces a polished, wearable garment.
