Skiing Optional Knit Sweater by Josée Paquin

What Is Being Made

Skiing Optional is a knitted sweater design created by Josée Paquin and published by UandIKnit in February 2019. This is an advanced-level knitting project suitable for experienced crafters looking to create a sophisticated pullover garment with colorwork elements and refined shaping.

Yarn Materials and Specifications

This sweater is worked in fingering weight and light DK yarn, offering versatility in yarn selection. The primary yarn shown in the pattern is The Little Grey Sheep British Hampshire 4 Ply in the colorway 'A Little of What You Fancy'. The design incorporates multiple contrasting colors for visual interest, with the pattern featuring three additional accent colors shown in hot pink, lavender, and light grey mini skeins from the same yarn line.

Total yardage requirements vary by size:

  • Smallest sizes: Approximately 828–1138 metres (906–1246 yards) of main color yarn
  • Larger sizes: Up to 2082 metres (2277 yards) for the largest option
  • Contrasting colors: Approximately 18–33 metres (20–36 yards) each of three accent colors, or 54–99 metres (60–99 yards) total for color work elements

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

This advanced knitting project employs several intermediate to advanced techniques. The pattern uses fundamental knitting stitches including knit (k) and purl (p) stitches as the foundation. Construction involves cast-on (CO) and bind-off (BO) techniques to establish and finish edges.

The sweater incorporates increase techniques for shaping, specifically M1L (make one left) increases, which are worked by lifting the bar between stitches with the right needle and placing it on the left needle to create new stitches. This method is commonly used in fitted garment construction for seamless increases that blend invisibly into the fabric.

Marker placement is essential throughout this pattern, with the design using:

  • Standard markers (m) to denote pattern sections
  • Beginning of round markers (BORM) for circular knitting construction
  • Slip marker (slm) instructions for moving markers between rounds

The pattern structure suggests circular knitting construction, a technique that creates seamless garments worked in continuous rounds rather than flat pieces. This approach is favored in modern sweater design for improved fit and reduced finishing work.

Design Complexity and Skill Level

Classified as an advanced knitting project, Skiing Optional requires solid foundational skills and comfort with shaping techniques, colorwork integration, and reading complex pattern instructions. The combination of multiple yarn colors, precise increases, and circular construction makes this suitable for knitters with substantial experience.

Available Sizes

The pattern offers multiple size options to accommodate different body measurements, with yardage and stitch counts scaling accordingly across the range. This flexibility allows knitters to customize the fit to their specific dimensions.
