Silk Two Tone Cardigan by Sian Brown

What is Being Made

This is a knitted cardigan designed by Sian Brown featuring a sophisticated two-tone colorway. The garment is constructed as a classic button-front cardigan with set-in sleeves and a tailored silhouette. The design incorporates color blocking with a primary color in green and a contrasting accent color in pink, creating visual interest through strategic color placement. The cardigan is available in eight size options, ranging from bust measurements of 86 cm (34 in) to 122 cm (48 in), with corresponding length adjustments from 43 cm to 50 cm (17 in to 19¾ in).

Techniques Used

This knitting pattern employs fundamental shaping techniques suitable for beginner-level knitters. The construction begins with cast-on stitches worked on smaller needles to create a neat edge, followed by garter stitch ribbing for the lower edge. The main body is worked in stockinette stitch, the most basic and commonly used knit fabric. Shaping is achieved through strategic decreases using skpo (slip, knit, pass slipped stitch over) and k2tog (knit two together) techniques to create a fitted waist and proper garment proportions. The pattern uses a circular needle for working certain sections, likely for the neckline or button band, which allows for seamless construction and easier stitch management.

Stitches Used

  • Knit (k) – the fundamental stitch creating the smooth face of stockinette stitch
  • Purl (p) – used in combination with knit stitches for textured sections and ribbing
  • Skpo (slip 1, knit 1, pass slipped stitch over) – a left-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • K2tog (knit two together) – a right-leaning decrease for fitted shaping
  • Make 1 (m1) – an increase stitch for adding stitches where needed
  • Stockinette stitch (st st) – the primary fabric created by alternating knit and purl rows
  • Garter stitch – created by knitting every row, used for the initial ribbed edge

Materials Required

This pattern calls for Debbie Bliss Silk yarn in DK weight (light worsted), which provides a luxurious drape and subtle sheen appropriate for a refined cardigan. The yardage requirements vary by size: the main color (Green 15: M) requires 6 to 8 hanks of 50g each depending on size, while the contrast color (Pink 28: C) requires 1 to 2 hanks. Knitters will need 3.25 mm (US 3) and 4 mm (US 6) knitting needles – the smaller needles create the ribbed edging while the larger needles are used for the main body fabric. A circular 3.25 mm (US 3) needle is also required for certain construction steps. The pattern specifies one large button for the front closure.

Gauge and Tension

The pattern is worked to a tension of 24 stitches and 32 rows to 10 cm (4 in) over stockinette stitch using 4 mm needles. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper fit, as the cardigan is sized based on this tension measurement. Knitters should always knit a gauge swatch before beginning the project to ensure their tension matches the pattern requirements.

Difficulty Level

This cardigan is rated as a beginner-level knitting project, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and simple shaping. The pattern uses fundamental techniques including cast-on, basic decreases, and stockinette stitch construction. While beginners can successfully complete this project, some experience with garment construction and reading knitting patterns is beneficial.
