Product Description

Tomorrow I’m leaving for Ann Budd’s Knit for Fun Retreat in Edmonton, Canada. I want to stay warm and toasty during my Canadian adventures so I decided to make a scarf especially for the retreat. It’s long, pretty and with cute pompoms, because why not? ;) And if you dread at the thought of endless rows like in a typical scarf, this design is perfect for you, because it’s knit sideways! With easy lace and a couple of short rows, because, again, why not? ;)

SizeOne Width: approx 36.5 cm/14.5” at wide end and 17 cm/6.75” at narrow end. Length: approx 250 cm/100”.

Sideways Scarf by Justyna Lorkowska

What Is Being Made

Sideways is a knitted scarf designed by Justyna Lorkowska and published by Lete's Knits. This is a triangular scarf knit from one corner, expanding sideways to create a distinctive asymmetrical shape. The finished scarf measures approximately 36.5 cm (14.5 inches) at the wide end and 17 cm (6.75 inches) at the narrow end, with a total length of approximately 250 cm (100 inches), making it a generous accessory suitable for wrapping and styling versatility.

Techniques Used

The primary shaping technique employed in this pattern is short rows using the wrap-and-turn method. Short rows are an advanced knitting technique that allows knitters to increase or decrease fabric dimensions without casting on or binding off additional stitches. By working partial rows and wrapping stitches at the turning points, the scarf gradually widens as it is knitted sideways. This creates the triangular silhouette without requiring complex decreases or increases worked across full rows. The pattern recommends consulting instructional resources to master the wrap-and-turn short row technique before beginning, ensuring proper tension and neat wrapped stitches throughout the project.

Stitches Used

Sideways is worked primarily in Garter stitch, which is created by knitting every row when working flat on straight or circular needles. Garter stitch is a fundamental and beginner-friendly stitch that produces a reversible, textured fabric with horizontal ridges on both sides. This stitch choice makes the scarf suitable for knitters of beginner skill level while the short row shaping adds moderate complexity. The combination of simple stitch work with strategic short row placement allows newer knitters to develop their skills in a manageable way.

Materials: Yarn and Needles

The pattern calls for 4 skeins of Martin's Lab Comfy DK yarn, a DK weight (light worsted) yarn composed of 100% superwash merino wool. Each skein provides 225 meters or 246 yards per 100 grams. Superwash merino offers softness, breathability, and easy care through machine washing, making it an excellent choice for a scarf that will be worn close to the skin. The sample scarf shown in the pattern was knit in the colorway Candy Sparrow.

Needles required are 4.0 mm (US size 6) circular needles measuring 100 cm (40 inches) in length. Circular needles of this length accommodate the expanding width of the scarf as it grows sideways. Additional notions include 2 stitch markers for tracking short row sections and a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends.

Gauge

The pattern specifies a gauge of 18 stitches and 36 rows over 10 cm (4 inches) in Garter stitch when worked flat with 4.0 mm (US #6) needles. Checking gauge before beginning is essential to ensure the finished scarf meets the intended dimensions. Knitters should adjust needle size up or down as needed to achieve the correct gauge, as even small variations can significantly affect the final width and length of the completed scarf.
