Product Description

Inspired by these beautiful yarns, the pattern of this jacket combines bands of the multitoned Artesano Linen Silk DK, with Fair Isle designs using two solid shades of Alpaca Silk 4ply, worked double to match the weight of the DK. Both yarns are discontinued but try loveknitting or yarnsub for possible alternatives. Try to use a multi-tonal yarn like Noro Silk Garden Lite to replace the Linen Silk to get the same effect and the two 4ply solid shades could be substituted with DK weight or try Cascade Yarns Sonata 4ply used double. Do remember to check your tension with a swatch. The jacket is knitted sideways starting with the left front, followed by the back and ending at the right front edge. The sleeves have a slightly raised cap and are set in to the body. A band, or epaulet is added over each shoulder seam and finally the front band, welt and cuffs are added by picking up stitches.

Sideways Cardigan by Judy Furlong

What is Being Made

The Sideways Cardigan is a boho-inspired patterned cardigan jacket designed by Judy Furlong. This intermediate-level knitting project features a distinctive construction method and decorative Fair Isle colorwork elements. The garment combines textured bands with geometric patterned sections to create a sophisticated layering piece suitable for various occasions.

Construction and Knitting Technique

This cardigan is knitted sideways, meaning the fabric is worked horizontally across the garment rather than from top to bottom. The construction sequence begins with the left front panel, continues through the back section, and concludes at the right front edge. This sideways approach allows for unique shaping possibilities and creates interesting stitch line orientations throughout the finished jacket.

Stitches and Pattern Details

The Sideways Cardigan incorporates Fair Isle colorwork, a traditional knitting technique that involves working with two colors per row to create geometric and decorative patterns. The design alternates bands of solid-colored sections with Fair Isle patterned sections, building visual interest and texture throughout the garment. This combination of techniques requires attention to color changes and maintaining consistent tension across different stitch patterns.

Yarn and Materials

The original pattern was designed to showcase specific discontinued yarns: Artesano Linen Silk DK for the multitoned bands and Alpaca Silk 4ply in two solid shades for the Fair Isle sections. The 4ply yarn is worked double-stranded to match the weight of the DK yarn, creating a cohesive fabric throughout.

For current knitters, yarn substitution is recommended using www.yarnsub.com or consulting with yarn retailers and www.loveknitting.com. When substituting, choose a multitonal yarn to replace the Linen Silk DK for visual consistency, and substitute the two 4ply solid shades with DK weight alternatives. This approach maintains the intended appearance and fabric characteristics of the original design.

Gauge and Needles

Proper tension is essential for this intermediate project. The recommended gauge is 22 stitches and 32 rows to 10 centimeters worked over pattern using 4mm needles. Knitters should complete a gauge swatch before beginning the cardigan to ensure the finished garment achieves the intended dimensions and drape.

Design History

This pattern was originally published in GMC Knitting Magazine, Issue 133 in Autumn 2014. The design draws inspiration from the beautiful qualities of the featured yarns, combining their colors and textures into a cohesive and wearable cardigan.
