Showy Shells Shawl - PW-108

Design Overview

The Showy Shells Shawl is an intermediate-level crochet design created by Nancy Brown. This triangular shawl measures approximately 72 inches across the top edge at the neck and 33 inches from the center point to the top edge, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping. The pattern is worked from the center top downward, beginning at the neck edge and expanding outward to create a elegant, shell-textured silhouette.

Construction Method and Techniques

This shawl employs fundamental crochet expansion techniques to achieve its triangular shape. The pattern begins with a small foundation ring at the neck edge, then systematically increases through strategic placement of stitches and stitch groups. The construction method uses a center-top-down approach, which allows the shawl to grow organically from a single point, creating natural shaping without complex decreases.

The design incorporates several specialized stitch techniques that add visual interest and texture. Shell stitches form the primary decorative element, creating the characteristic scalloped appearance that gives this shawl its name. V-stitches and double V-stitches are strategically placed, particularly at the center of the shawl, to manage increases and create structural definition. Picot edging is used as a finishing detail, adding a delicate, decorative border to the completed shawl.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

  • Shell Stitch: Defined as (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) worked in the same space, creating the distinctive shell or scallop shape that forms the primary visual motif throughout the shawl
  • V-Stitch: Constructed as (dc, ch 4, dc) in the same space, used to create open, airy sections and manage shaping
  • Double V-Stitch: A variation used at the center of the shawl, worked as (dc, ch 4, dc, ch 4, dc) in the same space to accommodate the center expansion point
  • Picot: A decorative finishing stitch created by chaining 3 and slip stitching into the two front loops of the preceding single crochet, producing a small, looped edge detail
  • Foundation Stitches: The pattern uses double crochet (dc), single crochet (sc), chain (ch), and slip stitch (sl st) as the fundamental building blocks

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern calls for Yarn Bee Glowing, an aran-weight yarn available through Hobby Lobby. The yarn is worked with a Boye crochet hook in U.S. size J. The project requires 5 balls of the yarn in the Purple Multi colorway (#08), with each ball containing 4 ounces and 181 yards, providing approximately 905 yards of total yardage for the completed shawl.

Gauge and Sizing

The pattern specifies a gauge of one shell measuring 2 inches in width, with 2 rows equaling 1½ inches in height. Maintaining this gauge is essential for achieving the finished dimensions of the shawl. The intermediate skill level indicates that crocheters should be comfortable with basic stitches, reading pattern abbreviations, and working with stitch multiples and increases.
