Product Description
This headband is a good project to practice short rows without too much commitment. The finished headband doesn't slip out and it is a quick knit, so it's easy to make one in every color. There are basic instructions for short rows in the pattern. The pattern is written for sport weight yarn, but I've had good results with yarn up to a light worsted weight.

Short Row Headband by Kelly Spenhoff
What Is Being Made
The Short Row Headband is a stretchy knitted headband designed to fit most big kids through adults. This one-size-fits-most accessory stretches to approximately 20 inches (51 cm) when worn, making it a versatile piece suitable for various head sizes. The headband is an excellent project for knitters looking to practice short row techniques while creating a practical, wearable item.
Techniques Used
This pattern focuses on teaching and practicing wrap and turn short rows, a shaping technique that allows knitters to create curves and contours without increasing or decreasing stitches in the traditional way. Short rows work by turning the knitting before completing a full row, then wrapping the stitch where the turn occurs to prevent holes. This technique is essential for creating the fitted, stretchy nature of the headband.
The headband is worked in the round using a circular needle, which creates a seamless, tubular construction. The designer recommends using a cable cast on and loose bind off in 1x1 rib, which provides both security and elasticity at the edges.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k) – the fundamental stitch forming the fabric
- Purl stitch (p) – alternated with knit stitches to create 1x1 rib
- 1x1 rib – the primary stitch pattern, created by alternating one knit and one purl stitch. This ribbed texture provides stretch and recovery, essential for a headband that maintains its shape while stretching comfortably
- Wrap and turn short rows – the signature technique that shapes the headband
Materials and Gauge
Yarn: Approximately 30 yards (27.5 meters) of sport weight yarn. The designer specifically recommends using yarn with excellent elasticity, such as wool, to ensure the headband stretches without losing its shape or becoming baggy over time. This project is ideal for using up small amounts of scrap yarn from other projects.
Needles: US size 6, 16-inch circular needle, or the size needed to obtain proper gauge. The 16-inch length is appropriate for working in the round on a small circumference project.
Notions: One stitch marker to mark the beginning of rounds, and a yarn needle for weaving in ends.
Gauge: 1x1 rib measured over 20 stitches should average between 3.25 and 3.75 inches (8 to 9.5 centimeters). The designer provides a specific gauge-checking method: measure 20 stitches in 1x1 rib at rest, then measure the same stitches when fully stretched. Add both measurements together and divide by two to obtain the average gauge. This approach accounts for the stretch factor, ensuring the finished headband will fit properly and perform as intended.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it requires foundational knitting skills such as knitting in the round, basic knit and purl stitches, and ribbing, the primary focus is on mastering wrap and turn short rows. Knitters should be comfortable with circular needle techniques before beginning this project, though the short row technique itself is clearly explained and practiced within the pattern.
