What is Being Made

Shorelines is a downloadable knitting pattern for a classic pullover sweater designed by independent designer Rita Taylor. This intermediate-level project creates a fitted sweater available in five sizes ranging from 36 inches to 52 inches chest measurement, with an actual finished chest circumference of 39 to 55.5 inches. The sweater features a standard pullover construction with set-in sleeves and a consistent sleeve length of 46 centimeters (18 inches) across all sizes.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Shorelines pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The sweater begins with ribbed cuffs worked in a K1 P1 rib stitch, which provides elasticity and a finished edge. The main body and sleeves are constructed using stocking stitch (also called stockinette stitch), the most common knit fabric that creates a smooth, uniform surface. The pattern requires working flat on straight needles and incorporates shaping through increases and decreases to create the fitted silhouette and properly proportioned armholes and sleeves.

Stitches and Construction Details

• K1 P1 Rib: Used for the initial 4 rows, followed by a purl row, creating a classic ribbed edge that hugs the body
• Stocking Stitch: The primary stitch throughout the body and sleeves, worked over the larger needles at the specified tension

Materials and Needles

Shorelines is designed to be worked in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino DK, a luxurious yarn composed of 100% Merino wool. This DK weight yarn is spun at 115 yards per 50 grams (105 meters per 50 grams). The pattern requires two pairs of needles: 3.75mm (UK size 9 / US size 5) needles for the ribbed sections and 4mm (UK size 8 / US size 6) needles for the main fabric. Yardage requirements vary by size, ranging from 14 balls (700 yards) for the smallest size to 22 balls (1,100 yards) for the largest size. The original pattern features the yarn in Aqua shade, though the Cashmerino DK is available in multiple colorways.
