Product Description
This pattern uses duplicate stitch for the word and I included a link to the Purl Soho tutorial for anyone not familiar with it.
It is a great pattern for destashing/ using up scrap yarn as the duplicate stitch uses less than 2 yards.
The cloth itself is the written portion and the duplicate stitch portion uses a chart.
Shiny Dishcloth by Laura Dupuis
What Is Being Made
The Shiny Dishcloth is a fully functional cotton dishcloth featuring the word "Shiny" from the television series Firefly. This is a practical kitchen textile that combines everyday utility with pop culture fandom appeal. The finished cloth measures 9 inches by 8 inches, making it an appropriately sized cloth for washing dishes, wiping counters, or displaying as a decorative kitchen item for fans of the show.
Craft and Difficulty Level
This is a knitting project classified as Advanced Beginner difficulty. The pattern is accessible to knitters who have mastered fundamental techniques but are ready to expand their skills. The inclusion of duplicate stitch for adding the "Shiny" text introduces colorwork without requiring the more complex technique of intarsia or stranded colorwork, making it an excellent project for developing embroidery skills on knitted fabric.
Techniques Used
- Stockinette Stitch – The primary fabric structure, created by alternating knit and purl rows to produce the classic smooth, V-textured surface
- Garter Stitch – Used for the borders and edges to create a textured, bumpy finish that prevents curling and adds durability to the cloth edges
- Duplicate Stitch – An embroidery technique applied after the cloth is complete, used to add the "Shiny" text in a contrasting color without having to manage multiple yarn colors throughout the knitting process
- Cast On and Bind Off – Standard edge techniques to begin and finish the knitted fabric
Stitches Used
- Knit (K) – The fundamental stitch that creates the smooth face of stockinette stitch
- Purl (P) – Used in alternating rows to create stockinette, and in the garter stitch border sections
- Cast On (CO) – The foundation row that creates 36 stitches to begin the project
- Bind Off (BO) – The finishing technique that securely closes the final row and prevents unraveling
Materials and Tools
This pattern calls for Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, a durable, absorbent yarn specifically designed for dishcloths and kitchen textiles. You will need approximately 40 yards of Colour A (the main cloth color) and 1 yard of Colour B (for the duplicate stitch text). The pattern suggests using 2 balls of Bernat Handicrafter Cotton, one for each color, though the small yardage requirements mean you may have substantial yarn remaining for future projects.
Size US 7/4.5mm needles are recommended, though the pattern notes you should use the size needed to obtain the specified gauge. Additional tools include scissors for cutting yarn and a darning needle for weaving in ends and executing the duplicate stitch embroidery.
Gauge and Finished Dimensions
The pattern is worked to a gauge of 16 stitches and 20 rows over 4 inches (10 centimeters) in stockinette stitch. Achieving proper gauge is important for obtaining the intended finished dimensions of 9 inches wide by 8 inches tall. The pattern consists of 46 rows total, with the first 5 rows and final 4 rows worked entirely in knit stitch (garter stitch), while the center section alternates between knit rows and rows combining garter stitch borders with stockinette stitch in the center.
Pattern Structure
The Shiny Dishcloth pattern is straightforward and methodical. You cast on 36 stitches and work the first 5 rows entirely in knit stitch to establish a garter stitch border. Beginning at row 6, you establish a pattern repeat: the wrong-side rows feature 4 stitches of garter stitch on each edge with purl stitches (creating stockinette) in the center, while the right-side rows are worked entirely in knit stitch. This pattern repeat continues until row 41, creating a fabric with stockinette stitch in the center and garter stitch borders on all sides. The final 5 rows (rows 42 through 45) return to knitting all stitches in garter stitch, and row 46 binds off all stitches to complete the cloth. After the knitting is finished, you use duplicate stitch to add the "Shiny" text in the contrasting color.
