Product Description
This warm hat can be worn fashionably back and slouchy. Or pull it down over your ears to provide all the warmth needed when taking hay out to the pasture.
Construction Notes This hat begins with a ribbed brim worked lengthwise; stitches are then picked up from along the top edge and knit up in the round to the crown decreases. The hatband may be seamed or closed with a button. I think the seamed version would be wonderful for men! Worked in a bulky weight yarn this hat is incredibly quick to knit up, and the ridge and lace pattern makes it cosy without being overly hot.

Sheep Herder's Hat by BeckyinVT
What Is Being Made
The Sheep Herder's Hat is a versatile knitted hat designed for both fashion and function. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a warm, slouchy hat available in four child sizes (small, medium, large, and extra-large). The hat can be styled in multiple ways—worn fashionably slouched or pulled down over the ears for maximum warmth during outdoor work like farm chores. The design features a distinctive ribbed brim and decorative purl lace pattern throughout the crown.
Sizing and Measurements
The Sheep Herder's Hat is offered in four child sizes with the following specifications:
- Small: 15.25" (38.5 cm) circumference, 8.5" (21.5 cm) depth
- Medium: 17.5" (44.5 cm) circumference, 9.5" (24 cm) depth
- Large: 19.5" (49.5 cm) circumference, 9.5" (24 cm) depth
- Extra-Large: 21.75" (55 cm) circumference, 10.5" (26.5 cm) depth
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This hat employs a unique construction method that begins with a ribbed brim worked lengthwise. Rather than casting on directly for the crown, stitches are picked up along the top edge of the completed brim and knit in the round to the crown decreases. This technique creates a sturdy, well-finished edge and allows for flexible closure options. The hatband may be seamed together or closed with a decorative button (0.75"/2 cm), giving knitters design flexibility.
The hat is worked primarily in the round using circular or double-pointed needles, which is the standard technique for achieving even, seamless crowns in hat construction. The crown decreases are shaped to create the proper hat silhouette and fit.
Stitches Used
The Sheep Herder's Hat features two primary stitch patterns:
- Ribbed Brim: The lengthwise ribbed section creates vertical texture and elasticity, ensuring the hat stays securely on the wearer's head
- Purl Lace Pattern: The main body of the hat is worked in a purl lace pattern, which combines purl stitches with yarn overs to create an open, decorative texture while maintaining warmth through the layered fabric
Yarn and Materials
The Sheep Herder's Hat is designed to be knitted with Grand View Farm Charlotte Bulky yarn, a premium fiber blend consisting of 50% mohair and 50% Romney wool. This combination provides exceptional warmth, softness, and a luxurious feel—qualities essential for a hat intended for outdoor farm work. The colorway shown is Madder Root.
Yardage requirements vary by size:
- Small: 61 yards
- Medium: 81 yards
- Large: 92 yards
- Extra-Large: 117 yards
The bulky weight yarn works quickly and creates a dense, insulating fabric ideal for cold-weather protection.
Needles and Notions
To complete this project, knitters will need:
- US Size 11 double-pointed needles (dpns) or circular needles (or the size needed to obtain proper gauge)
- A tapestry needle for weaving in ends
- One optional 0.75"/2 cm button for closing the hatband
Gauge
The pattern requires a gauge of 11 stitches and 15 rows per 4"/10 cm square when worked in the purl lace pattern. Achieving the correct gauge is essential for proper sizing, particularly important in a hat where fit directly affects wearability and comfort.
Difficulty Level
Rated as intermediate, the Sheep Herder's Hat requires knitters to be comfortable with circular knitting, crown decreases, and lace stitch patterns. The lengthwise brim construction and pick-up method add a layer of complexity beyond basic hat knitting, making
