Product Description
I love baskets and I like the inside to be as pretty as the outside. So I designed this sheep basket, where the inside is the mirror image of the outside with the opposite colors. Nice for any storage in your study, crafts room, nursery and kitchen.
This basket is made with the same technique used for Mochila bags. You have to crochet this basket with two colors at the same time and with the 'yarn under' technique. This is explained in the pattern.
The pattern is completely written in English (American and English crochet terms) and in Dutch. I have also included a diagram of the sheep.
Crochet Sheep Basket by Carolina Speek
Project Overview
This is a downloadable crochet pattern for a charming sheep-shaped basket, designed by Carolina Speek as part of a containers collection. The finished basket measures approximately 8 cm (3.15 inches) in height with a diameter of about 12.5 cm (4.9 inches), making it an ideal size for storing small items, craft supplies, or decorative display. The intermediate-level pattern combines functional basket construction with a whimsical sheep design.
Materials Required
The pattern calls for cotton yarn in two colors:
- Ecru cotton yarn: 50 grams (approximately 125 meters or 137 yards)
- Brown cotton yarn: 40 grams (approximately 100 meters or 109 yards)
The designer recommends yarns such as SMC Catania Solids or Scheepjeswol Larra. The project uses 4-ply/sport weight yarn worked with a C2 (2.5 mm) crochet hook, creating a fabric with appropriate structure and drape for a functional basket.
Crochet Techniques and Stitches
This pattern employs several fundamental crochet techniques suited to intermediate crafters:
- Magic Ring: Used to begin the pattern with a secure center point
- Chain (CH): Foundation stitch for creating the base structure
- Single Crochet (SC): The primary stitch throughout the pattern, worked using the "yarn under" method exclusively through back loops only of the previous round
- Slipstitch (SLST): Used to join rounds seamlessly
- Increase (INC): Created by working 2 single crochets into 1 single crochet to shape the basket
Construction Method
The pattern uses a yarn under technique for all single crochet stitches, which is worked exclusively through the back loops of stitches from the previous round. This creates a distinctive textured fabric with pronounced horizontal ridges. Multiple colors are carried simultaneously throughout the construction, with colors brought forward as needed to create the sheep design details. This intarsia-style color work allows the sheep motif to emerge organically as the basket is crocheted in the round.
Pattern Format
The pattern is provided as a downloadable PDF in American crochet terminology. It includes written instructions, helpful reference pictures demonstrating the "yarn under" technique, and a diagram of the pattern structure. The designer recommends consulting online video tutorials for the "yarn under" crochet method if additional visual guidance is needed during construction.
