The triangular shape lends itself to many wearing options; scarf, shawl, kerchief style and more. Shawl of Destiny by Ambah O'Brien
What is Being Made
The Shawl of Destiny is a triangular knitted shawl designed by Ambah O'Brien that showcases the interplay between two complementary yarn colors. This versatile accessory features a neutral base paired with a pop of neon for a modern aesthetic. The triangular silhouette offers multiple wearing options, including traditional shawl draping, scarf styling, kerchief wear, and beyond. The finished shawl measures 90 inches (225 cm) across the top edge with a depth of 25 inches (62.5 cm) when blocked.
Techniques and Construction
The Shawl of Destiny combines two primary knitting techniques to create visual interest and texture. The pattern alternates between satisfying garter stitch sections and geometric lace motifs, blending classic and contemporary design elements. This combination of textures creates a fresh, modern aesthetic while remaining accessible to knitters of varying experience levels. The triangular construction begins at the top edge and expands downward, a traditional approach that allows for flexible finishing options.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch – forms the solid, textured sections throughout the design
- Geometric lace – creates openwork pattern sections with a 12-stitch repeat
Materials
This pattern is worked in fingering weight yarn (4-ply), which creates delicate drape and refined stitch definition. The design pairs a neutral yarn color with a neon accent color to achieve its modern color contrast. Standard knitting needles appropriate for fingering weight yarn are required. Gauge is measured at 20 stitches and 44 rows over 4 inches (10 cm) in garter stitch, though variations will affect final yardage and measurements. Blocking is recommended to achieve the stated finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
The Shawl of Destiny is rated as a beginner-friendly project, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to shawl construction or lace knitting. The straightforward combination of garter stitch and geometric lace, along with the forgiving nature of shawl projects, allows beginners to develop skills while creating a wearable, modern accessory.
