Product Description

This lovely modern circular cowl was inspired by the shades of grey of the wintry grey clouds during a long Scottish winter.

The cowl is knitted in the round with 3mm (2.5US) needles in stockinette (all rounds knit) from a provisional cast on. The last round is grafted to the provisional cast on with Kitchener stitch to create a perfect infinity scarf.

The blocked measurements of the cowl are width circumference 16” (40.5cm) by length circumference 30” (76cm).

The sample is knit with Drops Alpaca (100% Alpaca, 4 ply), 50 grams/167meters (183 yards), balls in: o 1 Off White (17) o 1 Light Grey Mix (501) o 1 Dark Grey Mix (0506)

There are endless potential great colour combinations and other types of yarn that would suite this pattern!

The pattern includes charts for the fair isle sections of the cowl.

Hope you enjoy the pattern! Happy knitting!

Shades of Winter Cowl by MunroSisters3

What is Being Made

The Shades of Winter Cowl is a knitted neck warmer designed by Fiona Munro from MunroSisters3. This cowl features a finished circumference of 30 inches (76cm) and a width of 16 inches (40.5cm), making it a versatile accessory suitable for wrapping around the neck multiple times or wearing as a single generous loop. The one-size design offers comfortable coverage for winter wear.

Knitting Techniques Used

This intermediate-level knitting project employs several key techniques to create visual interest and structure. The pattern incorporates stockinette stitch as the primary stitch base, which creates a smooth, classic fabric. The design features Fair Isle colorwork, specifically using a Triangle Fair Isle Chart that repeats across rounds, allowing knitters to work with multiple yarn colors in a single row. The pattern utilizes a provisional cast on with waste yarn, which enables a seamless join when the cowl is completed. Working in the round is central to this project, as indicated by the charted rounds and the use of double-pointed needles.

Stitches and Stitch Details

The foundation of this cowl is built on stockinette stitch, which is worked at a gauge of 23 stitches and 30 rows over 4 inches (10cm). The Fair Isle colorwork section uses a 12-stitch repeat chart that is worked across the round, with the Triangle Fair Isle Chart C repeated ten times per round to complete each full round. The chart itself is repeated for 6 rounds to create the patterned section. This structured approach to colorwork allows for manageable color changes while maintaining even tension throughout the piece.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Shades of Winter Cowl is designed to be worked in Drops Alpaca, a luxurious 100% alpaca yarn in the 4-ply weight category. The yarn provides 167 meters (183 yards) per 50-gram ball. The pattern calls for three coordinating colorways of Drops Alpaca:

  • Colour A: Off White (shade 17) – 1 ball
  • Colour B: Light Grey Mix (shade 501) – 1 ball
  • Colour C: Dark Grey Mix (shade 0506) – 1 ball

The monochromatic grey and white palette creates a sophisticated winter aesthetic with subtle tonal variation.

Needles and Tools

This project requires 3.00mm (US 2.5) double-pointed needles, or the size necessary to achieve the specified gauge of 23 stitches and 30 rows per 4 inches (10cm) in stockinette stitch. Additional tools include a stitch holder for managing stitches, a tapestry needle for weaving in ends, and waste yarn for the provisional cast-on technique that creates a seamless finish.

Difficulty Level

Rated as an intermediate project, the Shades of Winter Cowl is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle Fair Isle colorwork and circular knitting techniques. The combination of working in the round, managing multiple yarn colors, and executing a provisional cast-on makes this an excellent project for advancing knitting skills while creating a wearable, practical accessory.
