Serene Stripes Knitted Sweater by Pat Menchini

What is Being Made

Serene Stripes is a downloadable knitting pattern for a classic striped sweater designed by Pat Menchini. This intermediate-level project creates a fitted pullover sweater available in six sizes, ranging from bust measurements of 81-86 cm (32-34 inches) to 132-137 cm (52-54 inches). The finished garment features a contemporary design with horizontal stripes and is suitable for knitters with some experience.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

This sweater is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques appropriate for intermediate crafters. The pattern employs stocking stitch (stockinette stitch) as the primary fabric structure, which creates the smooth, classic appearance characteristic of modern knitwear. The striped design is achieved through color work using two complementary yarn shades that are worked in alternating sections throughout the garment. The sweater includes shoulder shaping to create a properly fitted neckline and armhole, with the pattern specifying approximate measurements to the shoulder shaping point for each size.

Stitches Used

  • Stocking Stitch (St St) – The primary stitch used throughout the body and sleeves, creating the smooth, uniform fabric texture
  • Ribbing – Used for cuffs, waistband, and neckline finishing to provide elasticity and a polished edge
  • Shaping decreases and increases – Incorporated for sleeve cap shaping and bust shaping to achieve the fitted silhouette

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern calls for Rico Essentials Merino DK yarn, a versatile double-knit weight yarn. Each 50g ball provides 120 metres (131 yards) of yardage. The color palette consists of two shades: Natural (shade 60) for Yarn A and Grey (shade 24) for Yarn B. Yarn requirements vary by size, ranging from 7 to 10 balls of the Natural shade and 3 to 5 balls of the Grey shade, depending on which of the six sizes you are making.

Knitting Needles and Tools

The pattern requires three different needle sizes to accommodate the various sections of the sweater:

  • 3 mm needles (UK size 11, US size 2-3) – Used for ribbed edgings
  • 3.25 mm needles (UK size 10, US size 3) – Used as an intermediate needle size
  • 4 mm needles (UK size 8, US size 6) – Used for the main body and sleeves in stocking stitch

Additional supplies include 2 stitch holders for managing stitches during construction.

Tension and Gauge

Achieving the correct tension is essential for this project. The pattern specifies a gauge of 22 stitches and 28 rows to 10 cm (4 inches) measured over stocking stitch using 4 mm needles. The pattern instructions emphasize testing your tension before beginning, as matching this gauge ensures the finished sweater will fit as intended and that yarn yardage calculations remain accurate.

Sizing and Fit

The sweater is available in six graduated sizes with actual bust measurements ranging from 91 cm (36 inches) to 142 cm (56 inches). Length to shoulder shaping ranges from approximately 55 cm (21¾ inches) to 60 cm (23¾ inches), and sleeve length ranges from 44 cm (17½ inches) to 46 cm (18 inches). These measurements allow for customization based on personal fit preferences and body measurements.
