Product Description
It's no secret that I love to design garments, which can be worn in more than one way. SERA is the newest edition to this collection. Wear it as scarf, infinity scarf or cowl.... Sera is completely reversible and there will be no wrong side but many ways to wear it.
In order to give you even more choices, I wrote the pattern for 3 different weights of yarn.
Material: • Approx. 360 (400, 440) yards of fingering weight (dk weight, worsted weight) yarn in Col1 • Approx. 50 (70, 90) yards of fingering weight (dk weight, worsted weight) yarn in Col2 • Circular needle size US 4 (3.5mm), (US 6 (4mm), US 8 (5mm)) 24” or bigger • Circular needle one or 2 sizes smaller as working needle. • Scrap yarn for provisional cast on • 3 buttons • Sewing needle Gauge: 6 sts = 1ʺ″ for fingering weight (5 sts = 1ʺ″ for dk weight, 4.5 sts = 1ʺ″ for worsted weight) code
Sera Cowl and Scarf by Christiane Burkhard
What Is Being Made
Sera is a versatile knitted accessory designed by Christiane Burkhard that offers multiple wearing options. This pattern allows you to create a single piece that functions as a traditional scarf, an infinity scarf, or a cowl, giving crafters flexibility in how they style and wear the finished garment. The finished piece measures approximately 46 inches (117 centimeters) in circumference with a width of 6.75 inches (17 centimeters).
Pattern Options and Yarn Weights
Sera is written for three different yarn weights, allowing knitters to choose based on their preferred materials and desired final drape:
- Fingering Weight Version: Requires approximately 360 yards of fingering weight yarn in the primary color and 50 yards in a secondary color
- DK Weight Version: Requires approximately 400 yards of DK weight yarn in the primary color and 70 yards in the secondary color
- Worsted Weight Version: Requires approximately 440 yards of worsted weight yarn in the primary color and 90 yards in the secondary color
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
This intermediate-level knitting pattern incorporates several classic knitting techniques. The construction uses a provisional cast on with scrap yarn, a method that allows stitches to be picked up later for seamless joining. The pattern is worked on circular needles, which is a common approach for creating seamless, tubular garments. The use of two yarn colors adds visual interest and demonstrates color work capabilities.
Needles and Materials
The pattern requires circular needles in sizes that correspond to the chosen yarn weight:
- Fingering Weight: US 4 (3.5mm) circular needle, 24 inches or larger, with a working needle one or two sizes smaller
- DK Weight: US 6 (4mm) circular needle, 24 inches or larger, with a working needle one or two sizes smaller
- Worsted Weight: US 8 (5mm) circular needle, 24 inches or larger, with a working needle one or two sizes smaller
Additional materials include scrap yarn for the provisional cast on, three buttons for closure or decoration, and a sewing needle for attaching buttons and finishing.
Gauge Information
Proper gauge is essential for achieving the correct finished dimensions. The pattern specifies the following gauges:
- Fingering Weight: 6 stitches equals 1 inch
- DK Weight: 5 stitches equals 1 inch
- Worsted Weight: 4.5 stitches equals 1 inch
Skill Level and Design Philosophy
Sera is classified as an intermediate knitting project, making it suitable for knitters with some experience beyond basic cast-on and bind-off techniques. The pattern reflects designer Christiane Burkhard's philosophy of creating garments with versatility and multiple styling options, allowing a single knitted piece to serve different purposes depending on how it is worn and fastened.
