Seigur Semi-Circular Lace Shawl by Corrine Walcher
What Is Being Made
Seigur is a semi-circular knitted shawl designed by independent designer Corrine Walcher. Named after the Icelandic word for "resilient," this shawl features a distinctive wide lace knitted-on edging that frames the semi-circular body. The finished dimensions measure 25 inches in depth with a 62-inch wingspan, making it a generous wrap suitable for layering or draping across the shoulders. This downloadable PDF pattern was created in 2018 and offers an intermediate-level knitting project.
Yarn and Materials
The pattern calls for Dragonfly Fibers Pixie, a 100% Merino wool yarn. The sample shawl was knit using 550 yards of yarn in the Springtime in Washington colorway, though the pattern specifies that 430 yards per 4 ounces is the standard yardage for this yarn weight. A 32-inch circular needle in size 4 US (3.5mm) is required, or a size adjusted to obtain proper gauge.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern specifies a gauge of 20 stitches and 28 rows per 4 inches when measured in wet-blocked stockinette stitch. While gauge is noted as not critical for this item, variations in gauge will affect the finished size, total yardage required, and the way the shawl drapes when worn.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
Seigur employs intermediate-level knitting techniques centered around lace construction. The pattern utilizes the following stitches and abbreviations:
- K (Knit) – The fundamental knit stitch forming the base fabric
- P (Purl) – The reverse of the knit stitch, used for texture and pattern variation
- K2tog (Knit two together) – A right-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count
- P2tog (Purl two together) – A decrease worked on the purl side
- P2togB (Purl two together, one stitch from the edging and one stitch from the body) – A specialized decrease that joins the knitted-on lace edging to the main shawl body
- YO (Yarn over) – Creates the openwork holes characteristic of lace knitting
- PM (Place marker) – Marks sections of the pattern for easier tracking
- SM (Slip marker) – Moves markers along the needles without knitting them
The wide lace knitted-on edging is a signature feature of this design, where the decorative border is created and attached to the main shawl body simultaneously using the P2togB decrease. This technique requires attention to stitch management between the edging stitches and the body stitches.
Yarn Weight and Difficulty Level
Seigur is designed for use with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, which are lightweight and delicate options ideal for creating the airy, flowing drape expected in lace shawls. The pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to work with lace patterns and the coordination required for a knitted-on edging technique.
