Product Description

When I was a child, we occasionally went to the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, New Jersey. It was a place of fun and wonders, with games, amusement park rides, and junk food of every kind. This top feels soft, easy, and summery, and reminds me of summer evening walks on the boardwalk.

Seaside Heights is worked from the bottom up in pieces, then sewn together.

The cable pattern is presented in both written and charted formats.

What Is Being Made

The Seaside Heights Cabled Top #202 is a versatile pullover sweater designed by Sue McCain and published by Vermont Fiber Designs. This garment is engineered as a fitted top with cable detailing, available in an extensive size range from XXS through 6X to accommodate diverse body types. The finished bust measurements span from 26.5 inches at the smallest size to 70 inches at the largest, with the pattern intended to be worn with approximately 2–4 inches of positive ease for comfortable wear.

Construction Technique

This sweater is constructed using a bottom-up, worked-flat approach, meaning the knitter begins at the lower edge and works upward toward the shoulders, with all pieces knitted flat on straight needles rather than in the round. The garment pieces are then seamed together to create the finished sweater. This construction method allows for easier cable placement and shaping adjustments throughout the body and sleeves.

Stitches and Cable Work

The pattern incorporates cable stitches as a primary design element. The abbreviations provided include specialized cable techniques such as 1/2 RC (half right cable), which is executed by skipping the first 2 stitches on the left needle and knitting into the front of the third stitch, then returning to knit the first and second stitches. This creates the characteristic twisted, rope-like texture that defines cable knitting.

Additional stitches used throughout the pattern include:

  • St st (Stockinette Stitch) – the foundational smooth stitch used for gauge measurement and base fabric
  • k (Knit) – the basic knit stitch
  • k2tog (Knit 2 Together) – a right-leaning decrease used for shaping
  • M1L (Make 1 Left) – an increase worked by inserting the left needle from front to back into the strand between stitches and knitting through the back loop to twist it
  • M1R (Make 1 Right) – an increase worked by inserting the left needle from back to front into the strand between stitches and knitting through the front loop to twist it
  • BO (Bind Off) – used to secure and finish edges

These increases and decreases allow the designer to shape the sweater at strategic points for a tailored fit across the multiple size options.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The Seaside Heights Cabled Top is designed to be knitted in worsted weight yarn, a medium-weight yarn that knits at 5 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch with a 9 WPI (wraps per inch) measurement. The pattern calls for a cotton/rayon blend fiber content, which provides breathability and drape suitable for a seaside-inspired garment.

Yardage requirements vary by size:

  • XXS–Small: 755–985 yards
  • Medium–2X: 1100–1330 yards
  • 3X–5X: 1475–1735 yards
  • 6X: 2020 yards

The model garment shown in the pattern was knitted using Berroco Modern Cotton, a yarn composed of 60% pima cotton, which exemplifies the recommended fiber blend for this design.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with cable techniques and manage multiple pieces and seaming. The cable work and shaping techniques require attention to stitch counts and pattern repeats, but the bottom-up construction provides opportunities to try on and adjust fit as the knitter progresses.
