Product Description
This pattern was created with the beginner lace knitter in mind.
A sort of sample of lace stitches, this triangle shawl will introduce you to 6 different lace stitches that are only worked on the right side of the garment and each wrong side is simply purled. The shawl is worked in layers of lace to give an over-all impression of a fancy layered cake.
May I suggest choosing a yarn that is more on the tonal side rather than variegated or heavily speckled. A simpler colourway will show off the lace much more clearly and really showcase all the hard work you put in to define those stitches (I have learned this the hard way, a couple times).
The finished size should be roughly about 72” on the longest edge after blocking, but feel free to keep going by adding more layers of lace on if you have enough yarn. I used almost 2 full skeins of Hedgehog Fibres skinny singles.
Seaside Cowboy Shawl by BurlyPurly
What is Being Made
The Seaside Cowboy is a triangular shawl designed as a Knit-A-Long project by designer Paul Cook, known professionally as BurlyPurly. This project exists in multiple versions, ranging from advanced to beginner skill levels. The Knit-A-Long version is specifically structured as a sampler-style shawl that introduces knitters to lace knitting techniques through a progressive, layered approach.
Project Structure and Design
The shawl is constructed as a 'lacy cake' with multiple distinct sections, each featuring a different stitch pattern to maintain visual interest and provide varied knitting experiences. Between each patterned layer, transition sections of Stockinette Stitch and Seed Stitch are worked to create structure and rhythm in the design.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Knit-A-Long version is specifically designed for beginner to intermediate lace knitters. The key technique feature is that lace stitch patterns are worked on the right-side only, while the wrong-side rows are all purls. This simplified approach makes lace knitting more accessible by eliminating complex wrong-side pattern work that would challenge newer knitters.
- Lace Stitches: Multiple different lace stitch patterns are incorporated throughout the shawl, with each section introducing a new pattern variation
- Stockinette Stitch: Used in transition sections between lace pattern layers
- Seed Stitch: Also used in transition sections to provide textural variety
- Purl Stitches: Form the entire wrong-side of the shawl
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The Knit-A-Long version requires 200 grams of Fingering Weight yarn (4-ply). This yardage allows for a substantial shawl while remaining manageable for the beginner lace knitter. The original inspiration for this design was created using Hedgehog Fibres Sock Yarn, though the Knit-A-Long pattern accommodates standard fingering weight options. Alternative versions of the shawl have been successfully completed with Qing Fibres yarn, requiring approximately two skeins of that particular yarn.
Skill Level and Accessibility
The Knit-A-Long version is rated as beginner-friendly for lace knitting, making it an ideal introduction to lace techniques for knitters ready to expand their skills. The simplified wrong-side construction and progressive introduction of different stitch patterns allow knitters to build confidence and understanding throughout the project. More advanced versions of the Seaside Cowboy exist for experienced knitters seeking additional complexity through intricate lace stitch-work on both sides of the fabric.
