Product Description
Seagulls swooping and frolicking on the beach and over the ocean inspired the
design for this shawl. The lace, texture and colorwork designs in this shawl each
represent Seagulls in flight.
The Seagull Shawl is offered in two sizes and has a bit of easy lace, a unique
textured pattern, and easy slip stitch colorwork with bands of garter stitch framing
each panel. The Mosaic section is perfect for a gradient yarn!
The shawl is worked top-down, triangular and the instructions are both charted and
written. Mosaic (slip stitch) is fun and relatively easy as colorwork goes, given that
only one color of yarn is used per row.
Contrasting colors and a smooth yarn are recommended for the Mosaic colorwork
to be vibrant and visible.
Yarn Required: Fingering shown in Sweet Georgia Tough Love Sock

Seagull Shawl by Kay Hopkins
Project Overview
The Seagull Shawl is a knitted triangular shawl inspired by seagulls swooping and frolicking on the beach and over the ocean. The design features lace, texture, and colorwork elements that each represent seagulls in flight. This intermediate-level knitting project is offered in two sizes and combines multiple techniques within a single cohesive design.
Construction Method
The Seagull Shawl is worked top-down in a triangular silhouette. This construction method allows knitters to try on the shawl as it grows and customize the final size by adjusting the number of rows worked. The top-down approach also makes it easy to bind off when the desired dimensions are reached.
Stitch Techniques and Pattern Elements
This shawl incorporates multiple stitch techniques to create visual interest and represent the theme:
- Easy Lace: Lace sections create an openwork design that suggests the flowing movement of seagulls in flight
- Textured Pattern: A unique textured section adds dimension and tactile interest to the shawl
- Mosaic Colorwork: Easy slip stitch colorwork creates vibrant color patterns using only one color of yarn per row, making this technique accessible to intermediate knitters. The Mosaic section is particularly suited for gradient yarns, allowing the color transitions to showcase the colorwork beautifully
- Garter Stitch Bands: Bands of garter stitch frame each panel, providing structure and visual separation between the different pattern sections
Pattern Instructions
The Seagull Shawl pattern is provided in both charted and written formats, allowing knitters to follow whichever instruction style they prefer. This dual-format approach makes the pattern accessible to knitters with different reading preferences.
Materials and Yarn Recommendations
The Seagull Shawl is designed for 4-ply yarn weight. For the Mosaic colorwork sections, contrasting colors and smooth yarn are recommended to ensure the slip stitch colorwork is vibrant and clearly visible. A gradient yarn works particularly well in the Mosaic section, as the gradual color transitions enhance the colorwork effect.
Skill Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty. While it incorporates multiple techniques including lace and colorwork, the individual elements are described as easy to relatively easy, making this an excellent project for knitters looking to expand their skills by combining several techniques in one garment.
