Product Description
These sea life themed sweaters and vests have ribbed welts and bands and a stocking stitch body with a sea life motif added to the centre front using the intarsia method, there are five lovely motifs to choose from; a lobster, a crab with baby, a turtle, seahorses or a dolphin. The motifs are worked using only two colours in a row which makes this an ideal pattern for those new to intarsia. The tops pictured are worked using a soft 100% cotton yarn in Aran weight, instructions for making a sweater or a vest are included.
The pattern covers sizes from age one to five with a good amount of positive ease, making them ideal for pulling on when the weather cools in the summer evenings. The instructions are written for knitting flat on two needles with the neckband and vest armbands knit in the round using a circular needle; notes on knitting these bands flat are included.

What Is Being Made
Sea Life Sweaters is a downloadable knitting pattern collection designed by Sylvia Leake featuring five charming sea life themed garments: sweaters and vests for children aged one to five years. The collection includes options to knit a Dolphin sweater, Seahorses sweater, Turtle vest, Crabs vest, and Lobster vest. Each design features a coordinating sea life motif on the centre front, allowing crafters to choose their preferred marine theme. The pattern provides instructions for both sweater and vest constructions, offering versatility for different seasonal preferences and styling needs.
Techniques Used
This pattern employs the intarsia method as its primary colorwork technique. Intarsia allows crafters to incorporate detailed pictorial designs into knitted fabric by working with separate lengths of yarn for different colored sections. What makes this pattern particularly accessible for those new to intarsia is that each motif uses only two colors per row, significantly simplifying the colorwork process compared to more complex intarsia projects. The garments are knitted flat on two needles, which is a traditional method that allows for easier intarsia work than circular knitting. The pattern includes instructions for finishing the neckband, completing the construction process.
Stitches Used
The Sea Life Sweaters pattern utilizes fundamental knitting stitches to create a classic, wearable design. The garments feature ribbed welts and bands, which provide elasticity and structure at the hem, cuffs, and neckline. The main body of each sweater and vest is worked in stocking stitch, a basic yet elegant stitch that creates the smooth, flat fabric characteristic of traditional knitwear. The sea life motifs are integrated into the stocking stitch body using the intarsia technique, creating a polished, professional appearance.
Materials: Yarn, Needles, and Notions
The Sea Life Sweaters pattern is designed to be worked with soft 100% cotton yarn in Aran weight. Cotton yarn provides breathability and comfort, making these garments ideal for warmer months and summer evenings when children need a lightweight layer. The Aran weight yarn works up at a medium gauge, allowing the intarsia motifs to display clearly while maintaining good stitch definition. The pattern is written for two needles in an appropriate size for Aran weight yarn. The garments are designed with positive ease, meaning they are intentionally sized larger than body measurements to allow for comfortable movement and easy dressing—a practical consideration for children's wear.
Size Range and Fit
The pattern covers five sizes ranging from age one to five years, with each size incorporating generous positive ease. This sizing approach ensures the sweaters and vests pull on easily over children's clothing and accommodate growth, making them practical investments for families.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as advanced difficulty, reflecting the intarsia colorwork technique required. However, the simplified two-color-per-row approach makes it an excellent introduction to intarsia for experienced knitters looking to expand their skills into colorwork.
