Product Description
The “portmanteau” Scrapix (or Scrappy Helix Socks) are worked using scraps of yarn, faded together using helical knitting to prevent any seam or jog. They are worked toe-up, allowing complete versatility on the yarn you use. Just keep going until you use up all your yarn or until the desired length. There are 3 different toe options, so you can make the perfect sock for you - includes guidance on which to choose.
The beauty of the toe-up construction with scraps is you can stop the sock when you run out of yarn, as long as you have completed the heel.

What is Being Made
Scrapix (Scrappy Helix Socks) are a pair of knitted socks designed to use up yarn scraps of varying colors and types. The pattern offers five sizes ranging from Extra Small to Extra Large, with finished foot circumferences from 13.75cm to 23cm (5½" to 9"). The socks are worked from the toe upward, providing complete flexibility in length and yarn usage—you can continue knitting until you run out of yarn or reach your desired sock length.
Techniques Used
Helical knitting is the signature technique in this pattern, used to blend multiple yarn scraps together seamlessly. This method prevents the typical jog or seam that occurs when changing colors in circular knitting, creating a smooth, integrated appearance as different colored yarns transition throughout the sock. The toe-up construction method allows knitters to work from the foot opening downward, offering maximum versatility for scrap yarn projects where yardage may be unpredictable.
The pattern includes three different toe options to accommodate various foot shapes and personal preferences, giving knitters the choice to select the toe style that best suits their needs.
Stitches Used
- Knit (k) – the primary stitch for creating the fabric
- Purl (p) – used as needed in the pattern structure
- Make one left (m1l) – an increase stitch for shaping the toe and other sections
- Stocking stitch – the main stitch pattern, worked in the round to create a smooth, classic sock fabric
Materials
Yarn: The pattern is specifically designed for 3-ply and 4-ply weight yarns, allowing knitters to combine scraps of these weights for a cohesive finished sock. The flexibility of the toe-up method means you can use whatever scrap yarn you have available.
Needles: 2.25mm (US Size 1) needles are required to obtain the correct gauge. The pattern is worked in the round using the knitter's preferred circular knitting method. A note in the pattern indicates that starting a toe-up sock on double-pointed needles (DPNs) can be challenging, suggesting that circular needles or other methods may be preferable for this construction.
Gauge and Sizing
The pattern calls for a gauge of 36 stitches by 50 rounds over 10cm (4") in stocking stitch. Achieving proper gauge is essential for obtaining the correct finished dimensions. Five sizes are available: Extra Small (15.5cm / 6" foot circumference), Small (18cm / 7"), Medium (20cm / 8"), Large (23cm / 9"), and Extra Large (25cm / 10").
Difficulty Level
Scrapix is rated as an intermediate-level knitting project. While the basic techniques are relatively straightforward, the helical knitting method and the management of multiple yarn colors and weights require some experience and attention to detail. This pattern is well-suited for knitters who have completed several basic sock projects and are ready to explore more advanced color-blending techniques.
