Product Description

Note: As of July 28, 2014 this pattern may either be purchased from the Knit Picks Website or download direct from my Ravelry shop.

The Scallops and Shells Shawl is worked from the top down, starting at the top with a long chain. Subsequent rows become progressively shorter (with widening shells) to end the body of the shawl with a single shell at the center bottom. The edging is worked with a row of single crochet stitches on the top and bottom edges, two rows of 4-chain spaces on the top edge, and a pattern of shells scalloping the bottom edge.

Finished Measurements: Crescent Triangle: 54” across top edging, 18” deep at center point

Scallops & Shells Crescent Shawl by MADuNaier

Project Overview

Scallops & Shells is an advanced-level crochet shawl designed by MADuNaier and published in the Knit Picks Serenity Crochet Collection in July 2013. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a stunning crescent triangle shawl featuring decorative scalloped and shell stitch elements that form an elegant, wearable garment.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a crescent-shaped triangular shawl with finished dimensions of approximately 54 inches across the top edging and 18 inches deep. The crescent triangle shape makes this shawl versatile for draping around the shoulders, and the scalloped shell details add visual interest and texture to the finished piece.

Techniques and Stitch Construction

The Scallops & Shells shawl employs advanced crochet techniques to create its distinctive appearance. The pattern utilizes a structured approach beginning with a foundation chain, followed by systematic row construction that builds the shawl's shape and texture.

  • Shell Stitches: The pattern incorporates shell stitch elements as a primary design feature. Shells are constructed by working multiple double crochet stitches into the same stitch or chain space, creating fan-like or scalloped formations. The pattern defines the mid-shell concept, which refers to either the center double crochet of an odd-numbered shell or the chain space between the middle two double crochets of an even-numbered shell.
  • Scallop Details: Scalloped edging creates decorative borders and textural elements throughout the shawl, enhancing its visual appeal and sophistication.
  • Foundation and Structure: The ground or body of the shawl begins with a foundation chain of 164 stitches, establishing the width and base structure for subsequent rows.

Stitches Used

This advanced pattern employs fundamental crochet stitches combined in strategic ways to achieve the scalloped shell effects:

  • Chain Stitch (ch): Used for foundation chains and chain spaces that create openwork elements and structure.
  • Single Crochet Stitch (sc): Provides stability and definition in specific areas of the pattern.
  • Double Crochet Stitch (dc): Forms the primary building blocks of the shell and scallop stitches, creating the textured surface.
  • Slip Stitch (sl-st): Used to join rounds and transition between sections seamlessly.
  • Chain Spaces (ch-sp): Openwork areas created by chains that allow for lacy, elegant sections within the shawl structure.

Materials and Tools

The pattern calls for specific materials to achieve the intended finished dimensions and drape:

  • Yarn: Knit Picks Palette in the color Comfrey, requiring 3 skeins total. Knit Picks Palette is a worsted-weight yarn suitable for the stitch definition required in this advanced pattern.
  • Crochet Hook: Size H (5.00 mm) hook, which works with the yarn to achieve the specified gauge.
  • Gauge: 19 double crochets equal 4 inches when worked with the size H hook, ensuring the shawl reaches its intended finished dimensions.
  • Additional Tools: Stitch markers to track pattern repeats and construction points, and a yarn sewing needle for weaving in ends and any finishing seams.

Pattern Difficulty and Skill Level

Classified as an advanced crochet project, Scallops & Shells is designed for experienced crocheters who are comfortable with complex stitch patterns, multiple stitch types, and pattern abbreviations. The combination of shell stitches, scalloped details, and the shawl's triangular construction requires strong foundational crochet skills and the ability to read and interpret detailed pattern instructions.
