Garment Overview

The Santarossa Sweater is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by OGE Knitwear Designs for creating fitted, classic sweaters in multiple infant and children's sizes. This intermediate-level knitting project is ideal for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to tackle garment construction. The pattern accommodates a wide range of ages, from newborns through children aged 12 years, making it a versatile design for growing families or gift-giving.

Knitting Techniques and Construction

The Santarossa Sweater employs circular knitting methods, a fundamental technique in modern garment construction. This approach allows knitters to work seamlessly in the round, reducing finishing work and creating smooth, professional results. The pattern uses both longer circular needles for working the main body and shorter circular needles or double-pointed needles for smaller circumference sections such as necklines, cuffs, and waistbands.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch throughout the Santarossa Sweater is stockinette stitch (abbreviated as st st), which creates the classic smooth, V-textured fabric characteristic of traditional knitwear. Stockinette stitch is worked by alternating knit and purl rows in flat knitting, or by knitting every round when working circularly. This stitch is fundamental to intermediate knitting and provides an excellent canvas for displaying yarn color and texture.

Yarn and Needle Specifications

The Santarossa Sweater is designed for sport weight yarn, a lightweight category that produces fabric with excellent drape and breathability—ideal for children's garments. The recommended tension is 24 stitches by 34 rounds per 10 cm (4 inches) when worked in stockinette stitch on 3.5 mm (US 4) needles, ensuring consistent sizing across all pattern sizes.

Needles Required

The pattern calls for three needle sizes, all in 3.5 mm (US 4):

  • Circular needles, 40 cm (16 in) length—used for smaller circumference sections
  • Circular needles, 60 cm (24 in) length—used for the main body and larger sections
  • Set of double-pointed needles, 3.5 mm (US 4)—used for finishing small openings such as necklines and armholes

Difficulty Level

Rated as intermediate, the Santarossa Sweater assumes knitters are comfortable with basic stitches, increasing and decreasing, and reading pattern instructions. This project builds skills in garment shaping, working with circular needles, and managing multiple sizes within a single pattern.
