You could make a Caucasian or an African American Santa!

You can make this scarf in about 3 - 4 hours, depending upon experience.

You will love making and wearing this cute scarf! Children will love having their very own Santa Scarf. Make one for each of your children or grandchildren.

NOTE: I've had many people ask me if my scarf patterns work with the Knifty Knitter boards and the answer is no. Why? Well the gauge is way too large and you can't get a tight enough stitch. Santa Scarf - Knitting Board Design by Connie Haney

Project Overview

The Santa Scarf is a beginner-friendly knitting board project designed by Connie Haney that creates festive scarves featuring Santa face designs. This downloadable PDF pattern offers two variations: a Caucasian Santa or an African American Santa, allowing crafters to choose their preferred version. The finished scarf combines colorful yarns and decorative elements to create a charming holiday accessory suitable for gift-giving or personal use.

What Is Being Made

This pattern produces a decorative scarf with an integrated Santa face design. The scarf features a multi-colored construction with distinct sections for the face, beard, and other facial features. Black buttons serve as eyes, and the design incorporates color changes and textural elements to bring Santa to life on the finished scarf.

Techniques Used

  • Knitting Board Construction: The entire project is created using a regular gauge (RG) knitting board, a tool that allows crafters to create tubular or flat knitted fabrics without traditional needles
  • Lucet Cast On: A specialized cast-on method used to begin the project on the knitting board
  • Color Changes: The pattern requires changing yarn colors at specific points to create the Santa face design and distinguish different facial features
  • Zig-Zag Wrap: A decorative wrapping technique incorporated into the scarf construction
  • Decreasing: Shaping techniques used to form specific areas of the design
  • Binding Off: The finishing technique used to secure stitches and complete the scarf edges
  • Pom-Pom Making: A traditional craft technique used to create decorative pom-poms, likely for Santa's hat or nose detail

Stitches and Stitch Work

While the pattern utilizes knitting board techniques rather than traditional hand knitting stitches, the project employs fundamental knitting board operations. The construction involves basic wrapping and looping methods specific to knitting board crafting, combined with color-work techniques to achieve the multi-colored Santa face design.

Materials Required

Yarns:

  • 2 skeins Lion Brand Wool Ease in White Multi 301 – for the bottom face section
  • 2 skeins Lion Brand Jiffy in Fisherman 099 – for the face (Caucasian version)
  • 2 skeins Red Heart TLC Essentials in Taupe 2335 – for the face (African American version)
  • 1 skein Caron Glimmer in White – for the beard
  • 1 skein Bernat Boa in Dove – for additional texture and detail

Tools and Notions:

  • RG (regular gauge) knitting board – the primary tool for constructing the scarf
  • Knitting board pick tool – used to manipulate stitches on the board
  • Large eye darning needle (plastic or metal) – for weaving in yarn ends and finishing
  • Crochet hook – for additional finishing techniques and detail work
  • 4 black buttons (¾ inch) – to create the Santa eyes

Skill Level

This pattern is designed for beginner crafters with basic knowledge of knitting board techniques. While the project requires familiarity with fundamental knitting board operations such as cast-on, binding off, and color changes, the straightforward construction and clear design make it accessible to those new to knitting board crafting.
