Product Description

All parts are knitted flat and sewn up at the end. No circular knitting is required.

I have used 4-ply (fingering) cotton yarn, however, you can use DK (8-ply) with slightly larger needles (3-3.5mm). If you would like to use DK, you will need about 30g of red. The doll will come out about 25cm with DK. If you are a loose knitter, I recommend using DK with fine needles (2.75-3mm).

The cotton swab is inserted into the neck area for extra stability. Omit it if you like. You can use safety eyes instead of mushroom-shaped beads. Attach them before stuffing the head if you are using them. You can use coloured fleece if you dislike the stuffing showing through the stitches.

Santa Knitting Pattern by Sachiyo Ishii

Project Overview

This is an intermediate-level knitting pattern for a finished Santa doll measuring 18cm in height. Designed by Sachiyo Ishii, this downloadable PDF provides detailed instructions for creating a charming knitted Santa figure using primarily 4-ply yarn and basic knitting techniques.

What Is Being Made

A three-dimensional knitted Santa doll standing approximately 18cm tall. The pattern creates a complete figurative piece with distinct body components including the head, body, and facial features, resulting in a finished decorative or collectible doll.

Knitting Techniques Used

  • Stocking stitch (St st) — the primary fabric construction technique, creating a smooth, classic knit surface
  • Increases — knit front and back (kfb) method used to add stitches for shaping curved sections
  • Decreases — knit two together (k2tog) and slip, knit, pass slipped stitch (skpo) techniques for tapering and shaping
  • Purl stitches (P) — combined with knit stitches for textural variation and pattern definition
  • Mattress stitch seaming — the recommended joining method for creating invisible, professional seams with right side facing

Stitches and Abbreviations

The pattern uses standard knitting abbreviations including K (knit), P (purl), Kfb (knit front and back), K2tog (knit two together), P2tog (purl two together), and Skpo (slip one, knit one, pass slipped stitch over). Stitches are held on stitch holders during construction.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern requires 4-ply (fingering weight) yarn in multiple colors and fiber types to create the Santa's various components:

  • [A] Red yarn — 20g of Rowan Summerlite 4-ply (50g per 175m, 100% Cotton) for the main Santa suit
  • [B] Peach yarn — 8g of Sirdar Snuggly 4-ply (50g per 226m, 55% Nylon, 45% Acrylic) for skin tones
  • [C] Dark brown yarn — 5g for details such as boots or hair
  • [E] Mint yarn — 3g for accent details
  • [F] White yarn — 5g for Santa's beard and trim accents
  • [G] White polyester yarn — 5g of Patons Baby Smiles Fleecy DK Fairy Tale (25g per 85m, 100% Polyester) for fluffy texture elements
  • [H] Cream yarn — 3g of the same Patons yarn for additional fluffy details
  • Yellow yarn — a small amount for embellishments

Tools and Supplies Required

  • 2.75mm knitting needles — appropriately sized for 4-ply yarn to achieve proper gauge
  • Chenille needle — for threading yarn through stitches during finishing
  • Stitch holder — for temporarily holding active stitches
  • Cotton swabs — used for stuffing and shaping internal structures
  • 5mm mushroom-shaped beads — for creating dimensional eyes or decorative details
  • Cotton thread — for attaching beads securely
  • Toy stuffing — polyester fiberfill for padding the doll to create a three-dimensional form

Construction and Assembly Notes

The pattern emphasizes leaving long yarn ends at the beginning and end of sections for efficient sewing. Seams are constructed using the mattress stitch technique with the right side of the work facing outward, creating neat, invisible joins. Cotton swabs are incorporated into the doll during assembly, likely to provide structure or support for specific features. The combination of smooth 4-ply cotton yarn with fluffy polyester yarn creates textural contrast, particularly for Santa's characteristic beard and trim details.

Lots of choice

Yes it’s only January, but I’m starting early for next Christmas. It’s an easy to follow pattern. All knit but not sewn together yet.
