Product Description
Bring some festive fun to your sofa with a Santa Cushion with a squishy pompom nose. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the cushion is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). The body of the cushion is stockinette with intarsia colour-work for Santa’s beard, and charts plus written instructions are included. You will also need a bag of toy filling to stuff the cushion and a pair of wobbly eyes. For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Santa Cushion Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
The Santa Cushion is a festive decorative cushion designed by Amanda Berry featuring a cheerful Santa face. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a squishy, three-dimensional cushion perfect for adding holiday charm to any sofa or living space. The finished cushion is constructed from two knitted pieces—a front and back—that are seamed together and stuffed to create a plump, huggable decoration.
Knitting Techniques Used
This pattern employs several key knitting techniques to achieve its festive Santa design. Intarsia color-work is the primary technique, allowing the knitter to incorporate multiple yarn colors in a structured, block-pattern method to create the Santa face details. Intarsia involves using separate bobbins for different colored sections, preventing the long floats that would result from stranding. The pattern also includes basic shaping through decreases to form the cushion's three-dimensional structure and contours. Seaming techniques are essential for joining the front and back pieces together securely before stuffing.
Stitches Used
- Knit stitch (k)—the fundamental stitch forming the base fabric of the cushion
- Knit two together (k2tog)—a basic decrease stitch used for shaping the cushion pieces
Materials Required
Yarn: The Santa Cushion requires DK weight (double knitting, light worsted weight, 8 ply) acrylic yarn in four distinct shades: White, Light Pink, Grey, and Red. Approximately 60g of each color is needed. The pattern recommends substituting with DK weight 100% acrylic yarns such as Hayfield Bonus DK or similar alternatives, as the original yarns used in the sample have been discontinued.
Needles and Notions: A pair of 4mm (US 6) single-pointed needles with a minimum length of 20cm is required for the main knitting. Additional supplies include a darning or tapestry needle for seaming the cushion pieces, 250g of toy filling for stuffing, a pair of wobbly sew-on eyes for the Santa face, a 6cm pompom maker for creating the characteristic pompom nose, and bobbins for managing the intarsia color-work sections.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters who have mastered basic stitches and are ready to tackle color-work techniques. The intarsia method and multi-color construction require attention to detail and familiarity with managing multiple yarn colors, but the project remains accessible to experienced beginners willing to learn new skills.
