Product Description
This pattern is available for free and can also be found on Ravelry.
There are a few options available for this pattern so please read through first. Options & changes in yarn colour are given in italics. If you want to try loop st then YouTube has some tutorials - that's how I learned it for this pattern!
I crochet in quite a 'fluid' fashion so if you find your Santa is on the slim side then add a few extra increases as mentioned on the pattern or maybe change up a hook size for the body.
Santa (Chocolate Cover) Decoration by Kippers Ning
What is Being Made
This is a charming crochet decoration designed to hold a Ferrero Rocher or chocolate truffle, making it perfect for festive table settings or as a hanging tree ornament. The Santa-themed chocolate cover combines functional design with decorative appeal, transforming a small chocolate into a festive centerpiece or gift embellishment.
Craft and Techniques
This project uses crochet as the primary construction method, with intermediate-level difficulty suitable for crafters with foundational crochet experience. The pattern employs UK crochet terminology throughout. The construction involves working in the round using a slip knot or magic loop foundation, which creates a seamless circular base for the Santa figure.
The design incorporates loop stitch (dclst) as a decorative technique, which creates textured loops ideal for representing Santa's fluffy beard and hair details. The pattern uses standard shaping methods including decreases to form the three-dimensional structure of the Santa decoration.
Stitches Used
- Chain (ch) – foundation and joining
- Slip stitch (slst) – joining rounds and securing
- Double crochet (dc) – basic fabric construction
- Half treble (htr) – primary stitch for body shaping
- Half treble decrease (htrdec) – reducing stitches for shaping
- Treble (tr) – textural variation
- Treble decrease (trdec) – advanced shaping
- Double crochet loop stitch (dclst) – decorative textured loops for beard and hair details
Materials and Tools
The project requires double knit (DK) or 8-ply yarn in multiple colors including pink or skin tone, white, and red to create the Santa character. Fine details such as facial features and buttons are worked using 2-ply or 4-ply yarn or embroidery thread for precision.
A 3.5mm crochet hook is used for the main construction. Additional materials include a needle for sewing up and weaving in ends, a cotton wool ball (optional, for stuffing), and a Ferrero Rocher or chocolate truffle to complete the decoration. The finished piece is sized appropriately to cradle a single chocolate piece securely.
