Product Description
Welcome to the Sandy Floss Shawl!
Knit to your own gauge and use as many skeins as you wish!
The best way to get the most out of your 4ply yarn is to weigh it before you begin. Then when you have used half of your yarn less approx 5g you can go on to do the central and decrease panels. This way means you could actually use more than 100g for a bigger cuddlier shawl if you wish! And no “yarn chicken” necessary!
My gauge is not important for the size of this pattern but I have provided the numbers below for those of you who prefer to use them.
22 sts x 33 rows 10cm x 10cm 4”x4” square in garter stitch (blocked) worked on 3.75 mm (US Size 5) needles, or size needed to obtain the correct gauge.
What yarn to use? 100g of a soft fingering/sock yarn of similar yardage to what I used in my samples. You can use more if you wish! (See Gauge above for more information on using more yarn).
Sandy Floss Shawl by Loulabella Knits
What is Being Made
The Sandy Floss is a knitted shawl designed by Louise Skelding of Loulabella Knits. This design draws inspiration from the sea, specifically the delicate seafoam and residue left by the tide on the beach. The shawl is named for its resemblance to sandy cotton candy or candy floss, capturing the light and bubbly aesthetic of coastal landscapes. This project is designed to showcase a special skein or multiple skeins of yarn while providing a relaxing, meditative knitting experience reminiscent of a peaceful day at the beach.
Techniques and Construction
The Sandy Floss shawl features a garter stitch construction as its primary fabric base. The design incorporates lacy borders and edgings that create the seafoam-inspired aesthetic central to the pattern's concept. These lacy elements contrast with the textured garter stitch body, adding visual interest and dimension to the finished piece. The pattern is engineered to maximize yarn usage, allowing knitters to get the most yardage from their chosen yarn while creating a garment with excellent drape and movement.
Stitches Used
- Garter stitch (primary fabric construction)
- Lace stitches (borders and edgings)
Materials and Yarn Weight
The Sandy Floss shawl is designed to work with 3-ply and 4-ply yarn weights, offering flexibility for knitters with different yarn preferences. The pattern includes gauge information to help knitters understand yarn usage, though the designer notes that gauge is not critical for achieving the intended shawl size. Instead, gauge becomes important for predicting yarn consumption, allowing crafters to plan their projects effectively and ensure they have sufficient yardage to complete the design.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate difficulty, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with lace elements and following more complex stitch patterns. The combination of garter stitch simplicity with lacy border techniques provides an engaging project that builds skills without overwhelming newer knitters.
