A note on yarn choices; I find Dream state to be a light worsted, so if you are not using it as your CC, I suggest subbing another Dk yarn in its place.

Sandoval Knit Sweater by Annie Haas

What is Being Made

Sandoval is a downloadable knitting pattern for a sweater or jumper designed by independent designer Annie Haas. This intermediate-level project is constructed using the knitting craft and features colorwork design elements, as evidenced by the use of a main color and contrasting color yarn throughout the garment.

Yarn Requirements

The Sandoval pattern calls for two distinct yarns to create its colorwork design:

  • Main Color (MC): Sugar Plum Circus BFL DK weight yarn, shown in the Knight Scene colorway. Yardage requirements range from approximately 830 yards for the smallest size up to 1490 yards for the largest size, depending on the specific size selected.
  • Contrasting Color (CC): Spincycle Yarns Dream State light worsted weight yarn, shown in the Salty Dog colorway. Contrasting color yardage ranges from approximately 220 yards for smaller sizes to 380 yards for larger sizes.

The pattern notes that Dream State yarn is classified as light worsted weight. If substituting an alternative contrasting color yarn, the designer recommends using another DK weight yarn to maintain proper gauge and fit.

Needles and Tools

The Sandoval pattern requires circular needles in three different sizes to accommodate the various sections of the sweater construction:

  • US Size 6 (4.0 mm) circular needles with a minimum 30-inch cord length
  • US Size 7 (4.5 mm) circular needles with a minimum 30-inch cord length
  • US Size 8 (5.0 mm) circular needles with a minimum 9-inch cord length

The pattern notes that for the yoke and body sections, particularly in larger sizes, knitters may benefit from using circular needles with longer cords than the minimum specified to accommodate the increased stitch count comfortably.

Knitting Techniques and Stitches

The Sandoval sweater employs colorwork knitting techniques to create its design. The pattern utilizes circular needle construction, which allows for seamless knitting in the round. The sweater is constructed in sections, beginning with the yoke and progressing to the body, a common approach in modern sweater design that provides excellent fit and shaping.

The use of multiple needle sizes indicates that the pattern incorporates ribbing or textured sections worked at a tighter gauge, alternating with stockinette or patterned sections at a looser gauge. This technique creates definition and structure in the finished garment while maintaining elasticity in ribbed areas.

Pattern Details

Sandoval is offered as a downloadable PDF pattern by This.Bird.Knits Designs. The pattern is designed for personal use only and includes detailed instructions across multiple pages. Multiple size options are provided to accommodate different finished measurements and yarn requirements. The intermediate difficulty level indicates that knitters should be comfortable with techniques such as colorwork, circular needle knitting, and following complex stitch patterns before beginning this project.
