Product Description

Note for clarification: If not clear, in final round, when pattern states to skip 2 sl st, it is referring to the sl st between the points, please also skip the sl st anchoring the point to the round.

I used a silver metallic wrapped size 10 white crochet thread for the sample and a steel US size 8 hook. Diameter is approximately 3 inches from point to point.

PLEASE feel free to contact me via PM or by posting a thread magic linking the pattern and/or my username if you run into any difficulties or think any clarifications are in order.

I am happy for finished objects made from this pattern to be used in whatever manner the crafter desires.

If you do make items from this design and have sourced it from Ravelry, I would appreciate if you were to create a project listing with a photo. Thanks :').

Sand Dollar Snowflake Crochet Decoration

Project Overview

The Sand Dollar Snowflake is a delicate crochet decoration designed by Marikamum Designs. This small, ornamental piece captures the geometric beauty of a sand dollar combined with snowflake-like points, making it an ideal embellishment for seasonal décor, gift toppers, or holiday displays. The finished design measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) in diameter from point to point, creating a petite yet striking decorative accent.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a single crochet snowflake ornament with a dimensional, textured appearance. The design features six prominent popcorn stitch elements arranged in a circular formation, creating pointed projections that resemble both a sand dollar's segments and a traditional snowflake's rays. The piece is worked in the round from a central ring, building outward with increasing complexity in each round.

Techniques Used

The Sand Dollar Snowflake employs fundamental crochet techniques combined with specialty stitch work to achieve its distinctive appearance. The pattern begins with a simple ring foundation and uses basic crochet techniques including chain stitches, single crochet, and slip stitches to establish structure. The construction progresses through multiple rounds, with each round adding new dimensional elements. Stitch placement relies on working into chain spaces and previous stitches to create the geometric pattern.

Stitches Used

  • Chain Stitch (ch): Used throughout the pattern to create foundation rings, spacing between stitches, and decorative loops
  • Single Crochet (sc): Forms the base round, creating a foundation of 12 stitches within the initial ring
  • Double Crochet (dc): Used as the building block for the popcorn stitch elements
  • Slip Stitch (sl st): Joins rounds together and secures stitch formations
  • Popcorn Stitch: A special stitch created by working 5 double crochets in the same stitch, then pulling the working loop through the top of the first double crochet and securing with a chain stitch. This creates a raised, textured bobble effect that forms the six prominent points of the snowflake

Materials Required

The Sand Dollar Snowflake is worked with thread rather than traditional yarn, specifically size 10 white thread combined with silver metallic wrap. This fine thread weight creates a delicate, refined finished piece with subtle sparkle from the metallic component. A US size 8 steel hook is used to work with this lightweight material, allowing for precise stitch definition and the small finished dimensions. The combination of white thread with silver metallic accents produces an elegant, frost-like appearance appropriate for winter and holiday decorating.

Pattern Structure

The pattern uses American crochet terminology and is organized in sequential rounds. Round 1 establishes the foundation with 12 single crochets worked into a ring. Round 2 introduces the signature popcorn stitches, with six popcorn stitch elements separated by chain-1 spaces. Round 3 creates chain-5 loops in each chain-1 space from the previous round, building the pointed projections. The pattern continues with additional rounds to complete the dimensional snowflake form. Instructions are written clearly with stitch counts provided in brackets to help crafters track their progress and verify accuracy.
