Product Description
The king of the jungle ... it’s Samson the Lion! Knitted in stockinette, Samson has a mane of knitted loops and is worked in acrylic yarns so it is easier to keep clean after play. Designed by Amanda Berry @fluffandfuzz, the lion is knitted in acrylic DK yarns on single pointed needles (not in the round). For confident beginners and above, other techniques used include casting on and off, knitting loops, knits, purls, increases and decreases, and seaming to finish.
Samson the Lion Knitting Pattern
What is Being Made
Samson the Lion is a knitted toy designed by Amanda Berry. This stuffed animal project creates a soft, cuddly lion figure suitable for children or as a decorative handmade gift. The lion features a distinctive mane and is constructed using fundamental knitting techniques combined with simple finishing details.
Craft and Primary Technique
This is a knitting project classified as intermediate difficulty. The pattern uses knitting as the primary construction method, making it accessible to knitters with some experience beyond absolute beginners. The design demonstrates how basic knitting skills can be combined with stuffing and assembly techniques to create a three-dimensional toy.
Stitches and Knitting Methods Used
Samson the Lion is primarily knitted in stockinette stitch, which creates the smooth, classic knitted fabric that forms the lion's body and head. The pattern utilizes DK weight yarn (also known as double knitting or light worsted weight, 8 ply), worked on 3.5mm (US 4) single pointed needles. The construction involves knitting separate pieces that are later seamed together, a standard approach for toy making. A stitch holder is used during the pattern to manage active stitches, and a darning or tapestry needle is essential for seaming the knitted pieces together securely.
Materials and Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for 100% acrylic DK yarn in four distinct color shades:
- Cream
- Yellow
- Orange
- Black
You will need a minimum of 100g (one skein) in each of the four yarn colors. The original toy photographed was knitted in Hayfield Bonus DK, a 100% acrylic yarn available in shades Cream, Sunflower, Fox, and Black. This specific yarn or any similar acrylic DK yarn is recommended for achieving the intended appearance and fabric characteristics.
Additional Materials and Notions
Beyond yarn and needles, completing Samson the Lion requires the following notions and materials:
- A 200g bag of toy filling for stuffing the completed knitted pieces
- Four 10mm buttons used as faux button joints, providing articulation and visual detail to the lion's limbs
- Two 6mm black buttons for the eyes
- Scraps of white felt to create eye highlights or accents
- Sewing needle and thread for attaching buttons and felt details
Design Features
The lion's distinctive appearance is achieved through the use of multiple yarn colors to create contrast and definition. The mane is suggested through the pattern structure and color placement. Button joints add a charming, articulated quality to the toy, allowing the limbs to move slightly. The combination of knitted fabric, stuffing, and embellished details creates a finished toy with personality and visual interest suitable for display or play.
