Product Description
This pattern is for a pair of ornately cabled socks. The focal cable itself is a Japanese cable that is just perfect for socks. The side cables also come to us from Japan. There’s enough “give” to make them comfortable, but enough unusual cabling to make them interesting to look at and fun to knit.
The back and the front of the socks are the same until the heel flap.
Skill Level: Intermediate (assuming a basic knowledge of knitting and purling, lace knitting and cabling).
The cable stitch is both charted and written out line by line.
This pattern is written for 2 circular needles and is written for sizes Small, Medium, Large and Extra Large, and is sized by gauge.
Any lightweight fingering yarn will work for this pattern.
Salisbury Cabled Socks by Linda Lehman
What Is Being Made
The Salisbury Cabled Socks are an intricately patterned pair of knitted socks designed by Linda Lehman. These are wearable art pieces that feature complex cable work throughout, making them a challenging project for intermediate to advanced knitters. The socks are available in multiple sizes ranging from Small through Extra Large, with gauge adjustments provided for each size.
Techniques and Stitches Used
This design showcases advanced cable knitting techniques that go beyond basic cabling. The pattern incorporates several specialized stitch methods:
- Focal Stitch Cable: The primary decorative element of the sock, which serves as the centerpiece of the design
- Mock Cables: Decorative cable effects that adorn the focal stitch cable, creating visual interest without the complexity of traditional cables
- Through-the-Back-Loop Stitches: Found in the side cables, this technique involves knitting stitches through the back loop to create a twisted effect and add textural variation
- Stockinette Stitch: Used as the base stitch for gauge measurement and likely for background areas
- Kitchener Stitch: Required for grafting the toe closure for a seamless finish
The pattern assumes knitters have foundational knowledge of basic knitting, purling, and traditional cabling techniques before attempting this intermediate-plus level project.
Materials and Specifications
Yarn Requirements: The pattern calls for 390 to 450 yards of lightweight fingering weight yarn, which is the standard for sock knitting. The yardage range accommodates different sizes within the pattern.
Needles and Tools: Knitters will need two circular needles in size 2.50mm for the Medium size, with adjustments available for other sizes (US #1 or #2 equivalents). An optional 12-inch straight needle in the appropriate size can be used as needed. A cable needle is essential for executing the cable stitches throughout the design. Stitch markers help track pattern repeats, and a tapestry needle is necessary for the Kitchener Stitch grafting technique at the toe.
Gauge Information: Proper gauge is critical for sock fit. The pattern provides specific gauges for each size: 9 stitches per inch for Small, 7 stitches per inch for Medium through Large, and 6.5 stitches per inch for Large through Extra Large, all measured over stockinette stitch.
Skill Level
Rated as Intermediate Plus, these socks are designed for knitters who have moved beyond basic sock construction and are ready to tackle complex cable patterns. The combination of multiple cable techniques, including mock cables and through-the-back-loop variations, makes this an engaging project for experienced cable knitters seeking a challenge.
