Project Overview

The Sailor is a beginner-friendly knitted toy doll designed to measure approximately 14 centimeters in finished height. This downloadable knitting pattern creates a charming sailor-themed doll suitable for crafters new to toy construction and three-dimensional knitted forms.

Knitting Techniques Used

Materials and Tools

This pattern requires 3.25mm knitting needles as the primary tool. The yarn is double knitting weight wool in multiple colors: white, blue, beige, red, brown, and black. Oddments or small quantities of each color are sufficient, making this an excellent pattern for using yarn scraps. A small amount of stuffing material is needed to fill the completed doll and create its three-dimensional form. A tapestry needle is essential for the bind and tie finishing technique and for weaving in yarn ends.

Pattern Structure

The Sailor doll is constructed in distinct sections beginning with the body. The body is cast on with 25 stitches using blue wool, then increased in every stitch to create 50 stitches for the foundation. Stocking stitch is worked for 8 rows to establish the main body section. Color changes introduce white and blue stripes, followed by an extended white section worked in stocking stitch for 11 rows. Shoulder shaping is achieved through a knit two together decrease row that reduces the stitch count back to 25 stitches. The pattern then transitions to beige wool for the head section, which features increases to expand the fabric and create the doll's head shape.
