Product Description
This top was inspired by the Altered Stitch’s yarn crawl theme: I Love the 90s! I’ve taken a contemporary twist on your favorite crop top from the good old days of totally tubular 90s fashion! The Sabrina Junk Top is knit in fingering weight held double, allowing for color blending. Use two different colors or more and have fun blending yarns together for this project! The top is knit from the bottom up in 1x1 and 2x1 rib stitch pattern. The top is knit in the round until you separate for the armholes and knit the rest of the garment flat, attaching the front to the back with an i-cord edging and strap. I hope you have fun with this knit!
Sabrina Junk Top by Born & Raised Knits
Project Overview
The Sabrina Junk Top is an intermediate-level knitted garment designed by Born & Raised Knits and created specifically for LA Yarn Crawl 2018. This downloadable PDF pattern features a contemporary top that showcases color blending techniques using Junk Yarn, making it an ideal project for knitters looking to explore creative yarn combinations and dynamic stitch work.
What Is Being Made
This pattern creates a fitted, pullover-style top with negative ease construction. The garment is available in nine different sizes, accommodating a wide range of body measurements. The fitted silhouette is achieved through the strategic use of negative ease, which creates a form-fitting garment that hugs the body.
Sizing and Fit
The Sabrina Junk Top is offered in nine sizes (labeled 1 through 9), providing flexibility for different body types. The pattern incorporates negative ease in two key stitch patterns:
- 1x1 rib stitch with -2.5 inches negative ease
- 2x1 rib stitch with -3.5 inches negative ease
Yardage requirements range from 360 yards for the smallest sizes to 460 yards for the largest sizes, with each color requiring the same yardage amount.
Stitches and Techniques
The Sabrina Junk Top employs several key knitting techniques that create visual interest and texture:
- 1x1 Rib Stitch: A classic ribbed pattern that alternates knit and purl stitches in a single-stitch repeat, creating vertical lines and elasticity
- 2x1 Rib Stitch: A variation that uses two knit stitches followed by one purl stitch, creating a slightly different texture and drape
- Knitting in the Round: The garment is constructed using circular needles, allowing the top to be knitted seamlessly without seaming
- Color Blending: A special technique featured in this pattern that combines two different yarn colors held together to create unique color effects and visual depth
Yarn and Materials
The Sabrina Junk Top is designed to be worked with Junk Yarn in two coordinating colors, both from the Boss Sock line:
- Color A: 'Sabrina' in Boss Sock Junk Yarn
- Color B: 'Claudia' in Boss Sock Junk Yarn
Both colors are worked at a 4-ply weight, which provides excellent stitch definition and durability. The yardage for each color ranges from 360 to 460 yards depending on the size being knitted.
Needles and Notions
The pattern requires the following tools and supplies:
- Circular Needles: US 6, sized 24-32 inches for the main body of the garment
- DPN Needles (Double-Pointed Needles): US 4-6 for working smaller circumferences, such as cuffs or necklines
- Notions: A darning needle for weaving in ends and stitch markers for tracking pattern repeats
Yarn Specifications
The pattern calls for Boss Sock Junk Yarn held double throughout the project. This means two strands of yarn are held together simultaneously while knitting, creating a thicker fabric and allowing for the color blending effects that define this design. The gauge is worked in both 1x1 and 2x1 rib stitches with two ends of Boss Sock held double, ensuring consistent fabric density and proper fit.
Skill Level and Construction
Rated as an intermediate knitting project, the Sabrina Junk Top requires familiarity with circular needle techniques, ribbed stitch patterns, and color work. The combination of knitting in the round and color blending makes this pattern suitable for knitters who have completed several basic projects and are ready to expand their technical skills. The negative ease construction adds another layer of consideration, as proper gauge is essential for achieving the intended fitted silhouette.
