Product Description
This beautiful wrap is knitted with picot edging and a stunning bellflower lace pattern, creating a Jane Austin era style that will turn any head.
Saadi Shiraz was a Persian poet who wrote: The rose and the thorn, and sorrow and gladness are linked together.
Note: This pattern was originally designed using DK weight yarn. For a thicker, winter wrap, this is still possible. You can also adjust the cast on by 17sts to make the wrap wider or thinner – removing 17 (or a multiple of 17) for a thinner wrap or adding 17 (or a multiple of 17) for a wider wrap.
Using this same method, you can also adjust the yarn weight to suit you

Saadi Wrap by Kelly Menzies
Project Overview
The Saadi Wrap is an intermediate-level knitting project designed by Kelly Menzies and originally published in Let's Knit Magazine, February 2014. This downloadable PDF pattern provides instructions for creating an elegant wrap suitable for various occasions and styling preferences.
What Is Being Made
The Saadi Wrap is a rectangular wrap garment with generous dimensions ideal for layering and draping. The finished wrap measures 34 cm (26 inches) in width and 122 cm (8.25 inches) in length, providing ample fabric for versatile wear and styling options.
Yarn and Materials
This project is worked using 4 ply weight yarn, requiring approximately 580 meters (635 yards) of yarn in total. The pattern sample was created using Drops Flora in shade 11 Petrol, which requires 3 balls of yarn. Knitters will need 3.5mm (US 4) straight needles, a yarn needle for finishing, and optionally a row counter to track progress through the pattern.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Saadi Wrap employs several fundamental and intermediate knitting techniques that create texture and shaping throughout the garment:
- Yarn overs (YO) – used to create decorative openwork and lace elements within the pattern
- Knit two stitches together (K2TOG) – a right-leaning decrease that reduces stitch count
- Slip, slip, knit (SSK) – a left-leaning decrease created by slipping stitches knitwise and purlwise, then knitting them together through the back loop
- Knit three stitches together (K3TOG) – a double decrease for more pronounced shaping
- Knit four stitches together (K4TOG) – an advanced decrease technique for dramatic stitch reduction
- Slip one, pass slipped stitch over (SL1 PSSO) – an alternative decrease method
- Basic knit and purl stitches – the foundation of the pattern structure
Pattern Construction and Gauge
The pattern is provided in both written and chart format, offering flexibility for knitters who prefer different instruction styles. The gauge is established at 26 stitches by 40 rows over a 10 by 10 centimeter (4 by 4 inch) swatch when worked in the pattern stitch using 3.5mm (US 4) needles. Achieving correct gauge is essential for obtaining the intended finished dimensions.
Difficulty Level
Classified as an intermediate-level project, the Saadi Wrap is suitable for knitters with foundational skills who are ready to work with multiple decrease techniques and lace pattern elements. The combination of yarn overs and various decreases creates visual interest while building technical proficiency.
