Product Description
This is a very sweet knitted Moses Basket/Crib/Cradle for a 5-6 Inch Doll. I have designed this in two main easy pieces. An outside knitted body and a knitted lining. It has handles like a baby crib or basket. I would perhaps on reflection make them thinner perhaps I-cord to give a more authentic look to the dolls basket. There is a lovely ruffle attached to the inner lining that drapes over the sides of the basket.
There is a blanket combined pillow pattern (like a sleeping bag) for a 5-6 inch doll.
You can actually use any yarn you choose. I have used DK yarn on 4 mm needles. Friends have knitted it in Aran with larger needles. The choice is yours and the colour choice is yours.
Give this a go I am sure you will enjoy knitting it.

Project Overview
Rowan's Moses Basket is a knitted crib and bedding set designed for 5 to 6 inch dolls. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a charming miniature sleeping space complete with a structured basket, fitted liner, carrying straps, and coordinating sleeping bag with integrated pillow. The design prioritizes simplicity and customization, allowing crafters to adjust dimensions, add personal embellishments, or modify structural elements according to their preferences.
What Is Being Made
This project yields a complete doll-sized Moses basket ensemble consisting of four primary components:
- Outer Basket: The main structural body that forms the crib, reinforced with interfacing for stability and shape retention
- Liner: An inner fitted piece that creates a finished interior surface
- Straps and Handles: Carrying handles that can be customized in width, construction method, or omitted entirely based on maker preference
- Sleeping Bag with Integrated Pillow: A coordinating bedding piece constructed from a single knitted component, with the pillow section stuffed to create dimension
Knitting Techniques and Construction Methods
The basket construction employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate-level crafters. The design is intentionally straightforward, built from individual pieces that are subsequently assembled. The sleeping bag and pillow are created as one continuous knitted piece, then stitched and shaped to form the finished bedding unit. The pillow receives light stuffing to maintain its form and provide visual definition.
Crafters have considerable flexibility in customization. The basket dimensions can be enlarged by increasing stitch counts and row numbers, with the designer recommending personal measurement-taking to achieve desired proportions. Strap construction offers multiple options: standard knitted straps, narrower versions for delicate proportions, or i-cord alternatives for textural variation. Stitch patterns can be modified throughout the project, and additional embellishments may be incorporated to personalize the finished piece.
Stitches and Stitch Patterns
While specific stitch names are not detailed in the pattern overview, the project accommodates stitch pattern modifications, indicating that crafters can substitute their preferred stitches within the basic structural framework. This flexibility allows for creative interpretation while maintaining the basket's fundamental construction.
Materials and Yarn Requirements
The project requires DK weight yarn in two coordinating colors or color combinations:
- 50 grams of DK yarn for the outer basket body and straps/handles
- 50 grams of DK yarn for the liner and sleeping bag with pillow
- Small amount of polyester fiberfill or toy stuffing for the pillow section
- Lightweight interfacing material for reinforcing the main basket body
The modest yardage requirements make this an excellent project for utilizing yarn stash materials or coordinating leftover quantities. Crafters are encouraged to select color combinations that reflect personal aesthetic preferences, as the two-color construction allows for creative coordination between the basket exterior and interior components.
Customization and Creative Possibilities
The designer emphasizes that this project welcomes creative modification and personalization. Beyond the suggested adjustments to size and strap construction, crafters may add decorative embellishments such as embroidery, appliqués, or textural details. The stitch pattern itself can be varied to create different visual effects or textural interest on the finished basket and bedding pieces.
