Product Description
ROWALLAN is cozy, cabley dream of a shawl. It’s worked from the top down in stockinette stitch with gradually increasing cables. The increases are worked the same as for a full circle pi shawl, but the cables scrunch up the fabric in a lovely way so that the resulting shape is a semi-circle. The lower edge is gently ruffled from the last row of cable crosses, and finished with a tidy I-cord bind off.
Instructions for continuing the shawl for a larger piece are included. Technical Editing by Laura Cameron.

Rowallan Shawl by Laura Chau
What is Being Made
The Rowallan Shawl is a cozy, cable-detailed shawl designed as a semi-circular wrap. It measures approximately 66 inches across the top edge and 26 inches deep (168 x 66 cm), making it a generous, wearable accessory suitable for layering or draping over the shoulders. The shawl is worked from the top down, allowing knitters to customize the finished size by adjusting yardage or continuing additional rows as desired.
Knitting Techniques and Construction
This intermediate-level shawl employs top-down construction with strategic increases that follow the mathematical principles of a full circle pi shawl. However, the cable pattern creates a unique effect by scrunching the fabric, resulting in the semi-circular shape rather than a traditional circular form. The lower edge features gentle ruffling created by the final row of cable crosses, and the shawl is finished with a tidy I-cord bind off for a polished edge.
Stitches Used
- Stockinette stitch as the primary base fabric
- Cable stitches that gradually increase throughout the pattern
- I-cord bind off for the finished edge
Materials and Specifications
The Rowallan Shawl is designed for DK weight yarn, requiring approximately 1265 yards (1156 meters) total. The pattern is shown worked in Handmaiden Cashmere 4 Ply, a luxury yarn blend of 100% cashmere offering 186 yards per 1.75 ounce skein, requiring 7 skeins in the Plum colorway. Knitters will need 4 mm (US 6) circular needles measuring 40 inches or longer to accommodate the increasing stitch count. The pattern includes technical editing by Laura Cameron and allows for customization using thinner yarns or additional rows to create larger finished dimensions.
