Product Description
When I raided my stash for “Lady Mary’s Lace,” I came across those two skeins of Bittersweet Woolery’s “Guilty Pleasures Sock yarn” - one skein of “Orchid”, one skein of “Little Miss.” Purchased two years ago at Rhinebeck and hoarded ever since, waiting for just the right shawl… They were not what I wanted for Lady Mary, but somehow I could not put them away. As I worked on Lady Mary, they sat next to my chair, and occasionally I would glance at them, and wonder “what would they be perfect for?” Sometimes it felt like they were watching me as I crocheted…
Then I started hearing a little voice in my head. It was Lady Rose, cousin to Mary, Edith and Sybil – she was feeling left out – “No shawl for ME?” The colors of those two skeins would be lovely on her, and finally I decided that three shawls in the group were not enough. Rose needed a shawl of her own. And so, the time has come for those two skeins, therefore we have:

Rose's Guilty Pleasure Crochet Shawl by MADuNaier
What Is Being Made
Rose's Guilty Pleasure is an advanced-level crochet shawl designed by MADuNaier. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a triangular or crescent-shaped shawl with a finished width of 51 inches across the top edge and a depth of 18 inches, though the depth is variable and can be customized according to maker preference. The shawl is designed to showcase beautiful stitch definition and lace elements, making it an ideal project for displaying treasured yarn in fingering weight.
Techniques and Construction Methods
This advanced crochet project employs sophisticated shaping and stitch manipulation techniques. The pattern uses shell stitches as a primary design element, which create decorative fan-like formations throughout the fabric. The construction involves careful placement and movement of markers to track pattern repeats and shaping increases. The design incorporates lace elements that require attention to stitch placement and tension control, making this suitable for experienced crocheters who are comfortable working with complex stitch patterns and shaping.
Crochet Stitches Used
- Chain stitch (ch) – foundation and pattern elements
- Single crochet stitch (sc) – structural and joining stitches
- Double crochet stitch (dc) – primary stitch for fabric body and shell components
- Slip stitch (sl) – joining rounds and finishing
- Shell stitch – defined as 5 double crochets, creating decorative fan formations
Materials and Yarn Requirements
This shawl requires 900 yards of fingering weight yarn, making it an excellent project for using treasured stash yarn or specialty sock-weight yarns. The pattern calls for crochet hooks in two sizes: H (5.00mm) and G (4.00mm), allowing for gauge control and varied stitch definition. A yarn sewing needle is needed for weaving in ends and finishing. The gauge is established at 17 double crochets = 4 inches using a size H (5.00mm) hook, which should be verified before beginning to ensure proper finished dimensions.
Pattern Notes
The pattern includes comprehensive abbreviations and specialized terminology such as tch (top of turning chain), Mid-Shell (center double crochet of shell), and marker management instructions including PM (Place Marker), MM (Move Marker), and RM (Remove Marker). These notations support the complex shaping and repeat tracking required for this advanced project. The pattern was created by independent designer MADuNaier and is available as a downloadable PDF format for immediate access.
