Product Description

ROSEBUD* is a knitting pattern for a baby cover suitable for a buggy or pram or basinnet Nothing overly difficult in this pattern and it's so pretty when complete. As shown there is one row only where you will be using 3 needles Where I have used a contrasting colour for the bobbles I think an all white or any colour of your choice would also look great. I have used 3x5mm knitting needles and approx 250gms of baby soft double knit yarn for this project.

Rosebud Baby Cover by SUSAN J WARD

Project Overview

The Rosebud Baby Cover is a downloadable knitting pattern designed by SUSAN J WARD for creating a decorative baby blanket suitable for prams or buggies. This intermediate-level knitting project produces a finished blanket measuring approximately 22 by 28 inches (56 by 72 centimeters), making it an ideal size for keeping babies warm during outings or as a decorative throw for nurseries.

What Is Being Made

This pattern creates a textured baby blanket featuring decorative bobbles as the primary design element. The blanket combines smooth stockinette sections with raised bobble stitches that add visual interest and tactile dimension. Crafters have the creative option to knit all bobbles in a single color that matches the main blanket, or to introduce multiple pastel colors by working each bobble row in a different contrasting shade, allowing for personalized color combinations.

Knitting Techniques Used

The Rosebud Baby Cover employs several intermediate knitting techniques that make this project suitable for knitters with some experience. The pattern utilizes yarn forward (yfd) techniques to create decorative eyelet or lace elements within the design. Slip stitch methods are incorporated to manipulate stitches across rows, creating visual texture and pattern variation. The most distinctive technique is the bobble stitch construction, which involves creating three-dimensional raised elements by knitting, purling, and turning multiple stitches into a single stitch base, then decreasing them back down to create a compact, dimensional bobble.

Stitches and Stitch Patterns

The pattern employs a focused range of fundamental knitting stitches combined in strategic ways:

  • Knit stitch (K) - Used throughout the pattern for creating stockinette sections and borders
  • Purl stitch (P) - Creates reverse stockinette texture and forms part of the bobble construction
  • Yarn forward (yfd) - Creates decorative openings in the fabric
  • Slip stitch (Sl) - Used to slip stitches as if to purl, creating visual texture without adding bulk
  • Decrease stitches - Including P2tog (purl two together) and K2tog (knit two together) for shaping bobbles
  • Pass slipped stitch over (psso) - Used in bobble completion to secure the three-dimensional element
  • Make bobble (MB) - A multi-step stitch technique that creates the signature textured elements by working five stitches (knit, purl, knit, purl, knit) into a single stitch, turning the work, then decreasing back to one stitch

The blanket features a garter stitch border consisting of 5 knit stitches at the beginning and end of every row, which provides a neat, finished edge and prevents curling. The main body alternates between stockinette sections (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) and decorative rows featuring yarn forward and slip stitch combinations that create visual interest between bobble rows.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

This pattern is designed for baby soft double knit (DK) yarn, a lightweight yet durable yarn weight ideal for baby garments and blankets. The main blanket requires 250 grams of baby soft double knit yarn in the primary color. An additional 25 grams (approximately) of contrasting baby soft double knit yarn is needed for the bobbles, allowing crafters to introduce color variation if desired. The pattern calls for 3 by 5 millimeter knitting needles, which are appropriately sized for DK weight yarn and will produce the correct gauge and fabric density for this intermediate project.

Construction Details

The blanket is constructed by casting on 128 stitches, which establishes the width of the finished piece. The pattern is worked in rows from bottom to top, with each row beginning and ending with 5 knit stitches to create the finished border. The stitch pattern repeats across the width of the blanket, creating a consistent, balanced design. The bobble rows are strategically placed throughout the pattern to distribute the textured elements evenly across the finished blanket surface.
