What is Being Made

The Rose de Reims is a sophisticated knitted cowl designed by JustJussi (Justine Turner Studio). This project creates a versatile neck accessory available in two length options: a shorter regular length of 61 cm (24.5 inches) or an extended longer version measuring 90 cm (31.5 inches). The cowl features a finished width of 16 cm (5.9 inches), making it a substantial and elegant garment suitable for layering or wearing as a statement piece.

Techniques Used

This advanced-level knitting project employs several specialized techniques that elevate it beyond beginner patterns. The cowl begins with a cable cast on, a foundational technique that creates a sturdy, attractive edge. The pattern incorporates working in the round using circular needles, which allows for seamless construction and continuous stitch work. The construction method involves creating stitches through slip knots and strategic needle placement, demonstrating intermediate to advanced handling of yarn and needles.

Stitches Used

The primary stitch pattern employed throughout the Rose de Reims cowl is moss slip stitch, a textured pattern that combines knit and purl stitches with slip stitches to create visual interest and dimensional texture. The abbreviations used in the pattern are straightforward: k for knit and p for purl. The moss slip stitch pattern is worked using the larger needles and creates a fabric with a gauge of 23 stitches by 30 rounds per 10 cm (4 inches). Materials and Specifications

• Yarn: Skeinz Heritage organic merino, a premium 4-ply weight yarn. For the shorter version, you will need 130 m (142 yds) of Colour A and 50 m (54.5 yds) each of Colours B and C. The longer version requires 200 m (218.5 yds) of Colour A and 75 m (82 yds) each of Colours B and C. Each skein of Skeinz Heritage organic merino contains 50g (1.75 oz) and yields 167 m (182.5 yds).
• Needles: The pattern requires two sets of circular needles in different sizes. Use 3.75 mm (US 5) circular needles measuring 50 cm or 60 cm (20 or 24 inches) for the initial cast-on and setup work. Switch to 5 mm (US 8) circular needles of the same length for working the main moss slip stitch pattern. Circular needles of these sizes accommodate the in-the-round construction method, or you may substitute with your preferred method for working circularly.
• Additional Tools: A darning needle is required for finishing and weaving in yarn ends.
• Gauge: Correct gauge is noted as not critical for this project, making it more forgiving for knitters who may not achieve exact gauge specifications. However, the target gauge when working the moss slip stitch pattern on larger needles is 23 stitches by 30 rounds per 10 cm (4 inches).

The use of organic merino yarn provides softness, breathability, and natural elasticity, making the Rose de Reims cowl comfortable for extended wear against the skin.
