Root Cellar Knit Waistcoat by BeckyinVT
What is Being Made
Root Cellar is an earthy, comforting knit waistcoat designed by Becky Herrick and published by Sugar Tree Designs. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a fitted vest suitable for a range of sizes, from 29 inches to 62 inches bust measurement. The waistcoat is worked as a single continuous piece from the bottom up, making it an accessible construction method for knitters seeking to create a polished, wearable garment.
Construction Technique
The Root Cellar waistcoat employs a straightforward bottom-up construction method, beginning with a garter stitch hem at the lower edge. The body is then worked upward in stockinette stitch, creating a smooth, classic fabric surface. This one-piece construction eliminates the need for complex seaming and allows for seamless integration of shaping throughout the garment. The design includes button closures, with three 0.75-inch buttons providing both functional fastening and visual detail.
Stitches and Techniques
- Garter stitch used for the hem, providing a textured, reversible edge that prevents rolling
- Stockinette stitch as the primary fabric throughout the body, creating a smooth, refined appearance
- Shaping techniques integrated into the stockinette sections to achieve proper waistcoat fit
- Buttonband construction for securing the three-button closure
- Stitch markers used to track pattern sections and shaping points
Yarn and Materials
The Root Cellar pattern calls for two coordinating yarns in aran and worsted weights. The main color (MC) uses Plymouth Yarn Mushyshi, a luxurious blend of 95% wool and 5% silk in colorway 01, requiring 348 to 843 yards depending on size. The contrasting color (CC) features Malabrigo Worsted, 100% wool in rich chocolate, requiring 180 to 380 yards. This two-color approach allows for subtle visual interest while maintaining the earthy aesthetic suggested by the waistcoat's name.
Needles, Gauge, and Sizing
The pattern is worked on US 9 (5.5mm) needles at a gauge of 16 stitches and 22 rows to a 4-inch square in stockinette stitch. Eight size options range from 29 inches to 62 inches bust measurement, with corresponding body lengths from 23.25 inches to 29.25 inches, accommodating diverse body types and proportions. Knitters will also need a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and four stitch markers to track construction points throughout the project.
