Rocky Mountain Trail Hat by Flo's Crafty Crochet
What is Being Made
The Rocky Mountain Trail Hat is a beginner-friendly crochet hat designed by Fiona Campbell of Flo's Crafty Crochet. This downloadable PDF pattern creates a finished hat suitable for heads with a circumference of 21 inches or larger, with adjustable sizing options available for smaller head sizes ranging from approximately 17 to 19 inches in circumference. The hat is finished with a decorative pom pom.
Crochet Techniques Used
This pattern employs fundamental crochet techniques that make it ideal for beginners learning core skills. The construction utilizes chain stitches as the foundation and incorporates working techniques such as back loop only (BLO) and front loop only (FLO) stitching to create texture and structure. The pattern also features the X stitch, a decorative technique created by skipping one stitch, placing a double crochet, then working another double crochet into the previously skipped stitch to form a crossed effect.
Stitches Used
The Rocky Mountain Trail Hat pattern uses the following essential crochet stitches:
- Chain (CH) – forms the foundation and base rows
- Single Crochet (SC) – provides a tight, dense fabric
- Half Double Crochet (HDC) – creates medium-height stitches for structure
- Double Crochet (DC) – used throughout the pattern for height and drape
- Slip Stitch (SL ST) – joins rounds and secures stitches
- X Stitch – a custom decorative stitch combining skipped stitches and double crochets for visual interest
Materials and Tools
The pattern calls for 100 grams of yarn in Light Worsted, Aran, Chunky, or Bulky weight, offering flexibility depending on desired drape and finished texture. The pattern works well with multiple yarn weights, allowing crafters to customize the final look. A 5mm crochet hook is required for construction. Additional materials include a tapestry needle for weaving in ends and finishing, scissors for cutting yarn, and materials for creating a pom pom to top the hat.
