Product Description
An all year round, casual sweater with simple slouchy body and cute mesh sleeves.
This sweater is worked in DK weight yarn to an Aran weight gauge, as it is designed to be quite lightweight and open. The sample uses a fairly thick DK, which could be substituted for a light Worsted yarn that meets the same gauge.
Construction: The Rockpool sweater is worked seamlessly from the top down. It begins by casting on across the shoulders and working back and forth in rows on the upper back, then the upper front. The main body is worked in the round in one piece from the armhole down to the hem.
Stitches are picked up around the neck to work the ribbed neckband.
The sleeves are worked by picking up around the armhole edge from the inside out to create a faux ‘seam’ on the outside of the garment. The rest of the sleeves are worked from the top down in rounds, in a simple mesh stitch pattern. The cuffs are gathered into a neat 2x2 rib.
Rockpool Sweater by Lily Kate France
Garment Overview
The Rockpool Sweater is an all-year-round casual knit designed by Lily Kate France, featuring a simple slouchy body paired with distinctive cute mesh sleeves. This intermediate-level knitting project creates a lightweight, open-structured sweater suitable for various seasons and occasions.
Yarn and Materials
This pattern is worked in DK weight yarn, with yardage requirements ranging from 786 to 1231 metres (859 to 1345 yards) depending on size. The sample garment shown is knitted in Dyebath hand-dyed pure wool merino blend in the shade 'Oysters', requiring 2 to 3 x 250g skeins depending on the chosen size. The pattern notes that DK weight yarn is worked to an Aran weight gauge to achieve a lightweight and open fabric structure. Designers may substitute a light Worsted weight yarn that meets the specified gauge requirements.
Needles and Notions
Construction requires both 5mm and 4mm needles. Specifically, you will need 24-inch (60cm) circular needles for the body, plus either double-pointed needles (DPNs) or a long circular needle using the magic loop technique for working the sleeves, cuffs, and neckband. Additional notions include scrap yarn for holding stitches, lockable stitch markers, and a tapestry needle for finishing.
Gauge and Construction Notes
The pattern is designed to be worked at a gauge of 18 stitches and 24 rows to 4 inches (10cm) in stocking stitch on 5mm needles when blocked. The sweater is intentionally worked in DK weight yarn to an Aran weight gauge, creating a notably lightweight and open fabric. This construction method allows for excellent drape and breathability, making it versatile for year-round wear.
Knitting Techniques and Stitches
The Rockpool Sweater employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for intermediate crafters. The primary stitch used is stocking stitch, which forms the basis of the body and sleeves. The mesh sleeves incorporate openwork elements that add visual interest and contribute to the sweater's lightweight character. The pattern utilizes circular needle construction for seamless or nearly seamless knitting, with the body worked flat or in the round on circular needles before transitioning to smaller needles for the fitted cuffs and neckband.
