Rock the Pompom Knit Hat by Pam Grushkin

What is Being Made

Rock the Pompom is a beginner-friendly knit hat designed to fit most head sizes from 21" to 23" in circumference. The hat features a slouchy, relaxed fit that sits comfortably snug at the brim without creating pressure on the head or hair. A decorative pompom tops the finished hat, adding a playful, finished touch to the design.

Knitting Techniques Used

This pattern employs fundamental knitting techniques suitable for beginners. The construction begins with casting on using smaller needles, then transitions to larger needles to establish the main pattern. The pattern incorporates a jogless join technique, which is a method used in circular knitting to create seamless transitions between rounds and eliminate the characteristic jog that can occur when working in the round. This technique requires careful attention to stitch orientation at the join point.

The hat is worked in the round using circular needles, which allows for continuous knitting without seams. The pattern uses a gauge-based construction method, meaning the finished dimensions depend on achieving the specified stitch gauge before beginning the main pattern work.

Stitches Used

The pattern utilizes basic knitting stitches accessible to beginners:

  • Knit (k) - the fundamental stitch that forms the fabric
  • Purl (p) - the reverse of the knit stitch, used to create texture and pattern variation
  • Knit 2 together (k2tog) - a decrease stitch that reduces stitch count by combining two stitches into one

These stitches are combined according to a pattern table that tracks progression through the rounds of the hat.

Materials and Yarn Specifications

The pattern requires 180 yards of aran weight yarn (also called heavy worsted weight), which knits at a gauge of approximately 4 to 4.5 stitches per inch. The sample hat was knit using Hedgehog Fibres Merino Aran, a 100% Merino wool yarn in the Pheasant colorway, which provided 182 yards of yardage.

Two circular needles are required: a #7 needle measuring 16 inches for the initial cast-on and ribbing, and a #8 needle measuring 16 inches for the main pattern work (or substitute sizes as needed to achieve the specified gauge of 18 stitches and 31 rounds equaling 4 inches in pattern stitch when unstretched with the larger needles).

Additional materials include a stitch marker for tracking round beginnings, a tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends, a pre-made pompom (the sample used a Lana Grossa Fell pompom), a sewing needle, and sewing thread for attaching the pompom to the hat crown.

Difficulty Level

This pattern is rated as beginner level, making it an excellent choice for knitters new to circular knitting or those seeking a straightforward project. While the jogless join technique requires some attention to detail, the overall stitch work remains simple and repetitive, allowing newer knitters to build confidence while creating a wearable finished object.
