Product Description
This eye-catching sweater features a textured, graphic cable and rib motif that beautifully transitions from and into a matching ribbing.
The Rock Formation Sweater features a straight body, wide crew neck and drop shoulders. The construction is worked top-down. The pattern starts at the shoulders with the upper front and back pieces, incorporating the neck and shoulder shaping. These pieces are knitted flat (back and forth) in k2/p2 ribbing that smoothly transitions into the body cable motif. The motif is then continued until the hem, which again transitions back into a k2/p2 ribbing for the bottom hem. The body sides are seamed (a simple straight seam) leaving an opening for the sleeves. Then the sleeves are picked up around the armholes and worked in the round in st. st. down to the ribbed cuff.
The cable pattern is provided in both charts and written instructions so you can choose which you prefer to work from.
I have also designed a matching shawl, the Rock Formation Shawl.
Enjoy!
Rock Formation Sweater by Lisa Hannes
What is Being Made
The Rock Formation Sweater is a textured, graphic pullover designed by Lisa Hannes of maliha designs. This eye-catching knit features a distinctive cable and rib motif that creates visual interest across the front and back of the garment. The sweater is characterized by a straight body silhouette with wide drop shoulders and a crew neckline, making it a versatile layering piece suitable for intermediate knitters.
Construction Method
This sweater is worked using a top-down construction method, beginning at the shoulders and working downward. The pattern is knitted flat (back and forth) rather than in the round, with separate front and back pieces that are incorporated together. This approach allows for straightforward shaping at the neck and shoulders as you progress through the pattern.
Stitches and Techniques Used
- Cable stitches – Featured prominently in the graphic motif across the front and back body pieces
- Ribbing – A classic k2/p2 (knit 2, purl 2) ribbing is used throughout, creating smooth transitions and structure
- Ribbed cuffs – The sleeve cuffs feature matching k2/p2 ribbing for a cohesive design
- Ribbed hem and shoulder lines – These areas incorporate the same ribbing pattern to frame the garment
Materials
The Rock Formation Sweater is designed to be worked in DK weight yarn using appropriate needles for this yarn weight. The combination of cables and ribbing in DK yarn creates a fabric with excellent drape and definition, allowing the textured motif to stand out beautifully.
Difficulty Level
This pattern is rated as intermediate, making it suitable for knitters with some experience who are comfortable working with cable stitches and managing shaping across multiple pieces.
