Rocha Jumper by Quail Studio – Pattern Summary
The Rocha Jumper (pattern reference RM007-00002-DEP) is a design by Quail Studio for Rowan, available as a downloadable PDF. The pattern covers two versions of the same classic pullover silhouette: a sleeved jumper and a sleeveless jumper (vest). Both versions share the same construction approach and are rated as beginner difficulty, making them an excellent choice for knitters who are building confidence with garment shaping.
Garment Versions
Version 1 – Sleeved Jumper (Pullover with Sleeves)
This version of the Rocha Jumper features set-in or drop-shoulder style sleeves worked separately and seamed. The sleeves begin with 41 (43: 45: 47: 47: 49: 49: 51: 51) stitches cast on using size 5 (5 mm) needles, and after an 8 cm ribbed cuff the sleeve continues in stocking stitch with gradual side increases. The yarn combination used for this colourway is Kidsilk Haze in Drab 611 (25 g balls) held together with Kid Classic in Clover 895 (50 g balls).
Version 2 – Sleeveless Jumper (Vest)
The sleeveless version follows the same body construction as the sleeved jumper but omits the sleeves entirely, resulting in a lighter, more versatile wardrobe piece. The yarn combination for this version is Kidsilk Haze in Bark 674 (25 g balls) held together with Kid Classic in Bitter Sweet 866 (50 g balls).
Sizing
The pattern is graded across nine sizes, designed to fit bust measurements of 71–76, 81–86, 91–97, 102–107, 112–117, 122–127, 132–137, 142–147, and 152–157 cm. The corresponding actual knitted bust measurements range from 108 to 190 cm, offering generous positive ease across all sizes.
Construction and Techniques
The Rocha Jumper is worked in separate flat pieces – a back, front, and (for the sleeved version) two sleeves – which are then seamed together. Key construction techniques include:
- Shoulder shaping: Worked using cast-off rows at the beginning of right-side and wrong-side rows. For example, the back shoulder shaping casts off 15 (17: 19: 21: 23: 25: 27: 30: 32) stitches on the first row, followed by 16 (18: 20: 22: 24: 26: 28: 30: 33) stitches on each of the next two rows.
- Back neck shaping: A central group of 27 (29: 29: 31: 31: 33: 33: 33: 33) stitches is placed on a holder, and each side is finished separately.
- Front neck shaping: Stitches are divided at the front, with a central 17 (19: 19: 19: 19: 19: 19: 19: 17) stitches placed on a holder for the collar. Decreases are worked over the next 6 rows (one stitch each row), then continued every right-side row for a further 3 (3: 3: 4: 4: 5: 5: 5: 6) rows, creating a neat, gradual neckline.
- Collar finishing: Picked up and worked using a circular needle, size 5 (5 mm), 40–60 cm long, incorporating the held stitches from both front and back necks.
- Sleeve increases: Side increases are worked at regular intervals along the sleeve to shape the sleeve from cuff to underarm.
