Product Description
The first Robins of spring have emerged, their melodic songs ringing clear through the spring air. The last of the snow is melting quicky, dwindling into puddles that evaporate quickly in the daylight. The air is fresh and slightly humid, carrying long forgotten scents of earth. Daffodils & crocuses have begun to peek from the earth & sunlight streams through the tree branches, just beginning to bud.
This cowl is cast on provisionally, worked flat & then grafted or seamed into a loop. Stitches are then picked up around the neckline edge and ribbing is worked to complete the cowl.
Robin's Egg Cowl by Alicia Plummer
What is Being Made
Robin's Egg is a knitted cowl designed by Alicia Plummer. This cozy neckwear piece captures the essence of spring with its construction and aesthetic inspiration. The cowl is worked flat and then seamed or grafted together to form a continuous loop, with a ribbed neckband created by picking up stitches after the main body is complete. The finished cowl provides comfortable, layered warmth around the neck and shoulders.
Knitting Techniques Used
This beginner-friendly cowl employs several fundamental knitting techniques suitable for those new to the craft. The main body is worked flat using the provisional cast-on method, which allows stitches to be picked up later for the ribbed neckband. After the flat body is completed, stitches are seamed or grafted together to form the cowl's continuous loop structure. The pick-up and knit technique is used to create the ribbed neckband by picking up stitches from the cast-on edge and knitting them in a rib pattern. This construction method makes the pattern accessible to beginners while creating a polished, professional-looking finished piece.
Stitches Used
Robin's Egg utilizes fundamental stitches that make it ideal for beginner knitters. The primary stitch is stockinette stitch, which forms the main body of the cowl and creates a smooth, classic fabric. The neckband is worked in ribbed knit, which provides stretch and structure at the neck opening. These essential stitches are worked at a gauge of 12 stitches and 14 rows per 4 inches in stockinette stitch, creating a fabric with good drape and warmth.
Materials and Tools
- Yarn: Plymouth Baby Alpaca Grande in color 3317, a chunky weight yarn requiring 330 yards total (3 skeins of 110 yards per 100 grams)
- Needles: US 13 (9mm) needles for the main cowl body and US 10 (6mm) needles for the ribbed neckband
- Additional Notions: 2 place markers for tracking pattern sections, a cable needle for any cable work or stitch manipulation, and a darning needle for weaving in yarn ends
Yarn Weight and Difficulty
Robin's Egg is crafted using chunky weight yarn, which knits quickly and creates a substantial, cozy fabric perfect for spring layering. The chunky yarn paired with larger needles makes this an excellent beginner-level project, as it works up fast and is forgiving of tension inconsistencies. The straightforward construction—flat knitting followed by simple finishing—ensures that knitters new to cowl construction can complete this piece with confidence and enjoy beautiful results.
