Robert Kaufman Palette – Just Kisses Quilt Pattern by Ariga Wilson

The Robert Kaufman Palette pattern, titled Just Kisses and designed by Ariga Wilson for Robert Kaufman, is a free downloadable PDF quilting pattern rated at an intermediate difficulty level. The finished quilt measures a generous 54" x 66", making it a versatile lap or throw size suitable for a wide range of settings. This pattern celebrates a beautifully curated palette of blue, green, and teal tones, showcasing the breadth and harmony of the Robert Kaufman Palette solid fabric collection.

About the Just Kisses Design

The Just Kisses quilt is a striking patchwork design built from a rich array of coordinating solid fabrics. The pattern draws its visual impact from the careful pairing and arrangement of 22 distinct solid colorways — labeled Fabrics A through V — all drawn from the Robert Kaufman Palette (SKU prefix K001) collection. The color range spans a sophisticated spectrum including shades such as Dresden Blue, Copen, Regatta, Delft, Cadet, Windsor, Dusty Blue, Teal Blue, Sage, Sky, Aloe, Desert Green, Celadon, Seafoam, Eucalyptus, Old Green, O.D. Green, Green Tea, Avocado, Pickle, Ivy, and Olive. Together, these hues create a cohesive, gradient-like effect that gives the quilt its distinctive and modern aesthetic.

Each fabric in the main body of the quilt requires just 1/3 yard, making this an excellent pattern for building or using a curated fabric collection without committing to large yardage of any single color. The binding is cut from Fabric H (K001-1373, Teal Blue), which requires a slightly larger 1/2 yard since it does double duty as both a piecing fabric and the binding. An additional 3-2/3 yards of fabric is needed for the quilt backing.

Quilting Techniques Used

The Just Kisses pattern employs foundational quilting techniques that are well within reach of an intermediate quilter, while still offering enough design complexity to keep the process engaging and rewarding.

  • Precise rotary cutting: From each of the 22 fabrics, the quilter cuts two 3-1/2" x width-of-fabric (WOF) strips, which are then subcutted into ten 3-1/2" x 6-1/2" rectangles and ten 3-1/2" squares. This systematic cutting approach ensures consistency and efficiency across all fabric groups.
  • Accurate piecing with 1/4" seam allowances: All seams throughout the pattern are sewn at a precise 1/4" seam allowance, a standard in quilting that ensures blocks come together accurately and the finished quilt lies flat.
  • Pressing seams open: The pattern instructs quilters to press seam allowances open unless otherwise noted, a technique that reduces bulk at seam intersections and helps the quilt top lie smooth and flat — particularly important when working with many small pieces.
  • Block construction and assembly: The design is built block by block, with the Quilt Assembly Diagram guiding the arrangement of rectangles and squares across the quilt top. Quilters have the flexibility to pair fabrics creatively or follow the diagram precisely.
  • Right sides together (RST) sewing: All piecing is done with right sides facing, a standard quilting construction method referenced throughout the instructions.
  • Binding application: The pattern includes binding instructions using the designated Teal Blue fabric, completing the quilt with a clean, professional finish.

Patchwork and Block Structure

The blocks in Just Kisses are composed of simple geometric units — rectangles and squares — that combine to create the overall pattern. The repetition of these shapes across 22 different solid fabrics produces a dynamic, visually rich surface. The pattern's name, Just Kisses, likely references the way the blocks and color units meet and interact across the quilt surface, creating a sense of gentle connection between the tones.
