Robert Kaufman Just Kisses Month 13 Quilt Pattern by Elise Lea – Free Downloadable PDF

Month 13 of the Just Kisses quilt-along series, designed by Elise Lea for Robert Kaufman, brings the entire project together into a stunning finished quilt. This free downloadable PDF pattern guides quilters through assembling all the blocks created during Months 1 through 12 into a cohesive, polished quilt top, complete with inner and outer borders. The finished quilt measures 60" x 76", making it a generous lap or throw size perfect for everyday use or gifting.

Rated as a beginner difficulty pattern, Month 13 is an approachable finishing step even for those newer to quilting. The instructions are clearly written and designed to be read through in full before starting, with standard quilting conventions such as a 1/4" seam allowance and pressing seams open for flat, precise results. Two layout options are included: a Traditional Setting and an Alternative On-Point Setting found on pages 5 through 8 of the PDF, giving quilters creative flexibility in how they display their finished blocks.

What Is Being Made

This pattern completes the Just Kisses quilt-along, a multi-month project by Robert Kaufman. The final quilt is assembled from blocks made in the preceding twelve months, then framed with both an inner border and a pieced outer border made from Half-Square Triangles (HSTs). The result is a structured, traditional-style quilt with a dynamic, scrappy border that showcases all the fabrics collected throughout the quilt-along series.

Techniques Used

  • Half-Square Triangle (HST) construction: Sixty-four HSTs are made by cutting 4-7/8" squares diagonally and sewing pairs of differently colored triangles together along the long bias edge. Each HST is trimmed to 4-1/2" square for accuracy.
  • Pieced border construction: HSTs are sewn together in rows to form the outer borders. Side outer borders each use seventeen HSTs, while top and bottom outer borders each use fifteen HSTs, creating a lively, directional frame around the quilt center.
  • Strip piecing for inner borders: Six 2-1/2" x WOF strips are sewn end-to-end and subcut into two side inner borders measuring 2-1/2" x 64-1/2" and two top/bottom inner borders measuring 2-1/2" x 52-1/2".
  • Block arrangement and row assembly: The finished blocks from Months 1–12 are arranged into four rows of three blocks and sewn together to form the quilt center.
  • Binding: Eight 2-1/2" x WOF strips are cut from the binding fabric and used to finish the quilt edges.
  • Pressing techniques: Seam allowances are pressed open by default for flat seams, with HST seams pressed toward the darker fabric to reduce bulk.

Stitches and Sewing Methods

  • Straight stitch: The standard stitch used throughout for all piecing, borders, and binding attachment, sewn at a consistent 1/4" seam allowance.
  • Right sides together (RST) sewing: All pieces are joined with right sides facing inward, a fundamental quilting technique that keeps raw edges hidden inside the seam.
  • Diagonal subcut: 4-7/8" squares are cut once on the diagonal to yield the triangles needed for HST construction, a classic and efficient method for producing accurate half-square units.
